Leeds Rhinos Women 46 Army Ladies 10

1st July 2018

By Dan Hawkhead

Leeds Rhinos Women are semi-final bound as they produced a spirited second half to defeat the Army Ladies 46-10.

The Rhinos put themselves in charge from the kick off as Dannielle Anderson scored a double inside twenty minutes. From an offside penalty conceded by the Army, the prop ran a strong line through defenders to score next to the posts her first and also took advantage of hooker Lois Forsell for her second. As Forsell took advantage of a slow ruck, the captain played a short pass to Anderson who powered over to double Leeds’ lead. Courtney Hill converted both making the score 12-0.

The Army hit back either side of the mid half water break. Toni Tomkins scored the first by using her speed from dummy half to drive over the tryline. Matilda Butler brought the score to within two points after Tomkins had come close again. Using the pressure on their opponents line, a wide pass out to the left put the fullback in plenty of space to touch down and make the score 12-10.

Sophie Robinson gave the Rhinos breathing space going into halftime. Off the back of a break by a returning Charlotte Booth, Leeds moved left and a pass to Robinson enabled the centre to step back on the inside and score. As Courtney Hill slotted the conversion, Leeds led 18-10 into halftime.

In the second half, Leeds kicked into gear and produce a confident, clinical display that kept the Army Women at only 10 points. Frankie Townend came off the bench to score. As Leeds worked their way towards their opponents try line, a short side pass from Forsell allowed Townend to reach out and score before being taken over the touchline. Hill missed the conversion but Leeds still had a 20-10 lead.

Sophie Nuttall made it back to back tries as she put her name on the scoresheet. Another break by Charlotte Booth down the middle was supported by the winger, who received the pass and sprinted through to score under the sticks.
But the best was saved till last as Caitlin Beevers scored a hat-trick inside the last twenty minutes. Beevers’ first try was a 100 metre dash from her own in goal to touching down at the other end. Slicing straight through the defence, nobody was catching the winger.

A spell of errors by both sides, in the hot weather, kept the ball turning over before Beevers scored her second. Again, Beevers sprinted away from defenders from 40 metres out to score under the posts again. Inside the last ten minutes, the hat trick was completed by the winger. A lucky bounce from a Hanna Butcher kick sat up perfectly for Beever who made no mistake in running through to score. Courtney Hill converted all three tries taking the final score line to 46-10 in favour of the Rhinos.
