Five Classic Clashes vs Huddersfield Giants

Leeds Rhinos are back in action this Friday as they travel to the John Smith’s Stadium to face Huddersfield Giants, who sit two points above Richard Agar’s side in the Betfred Super League.

Since the Giants entered the Super League in 1998, Leeds have recorded the most wins in previous away League fixtures against the Giants with 15, although Huddersfield have had more success in recent years winning five games at their home game in the league.

Here are five of our favourite clashes over the last 21 years:

1998 – Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants 16 Leeds Rhinos 72

In the first Super League meeting between the sides at the John Smith’s Stadium Graham Murray’s side ran thirteen tries past the Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants in one of the Rhinos’ highest away wins. Richie Blackmore, Brad Godden and Leroy Rivett scored twice for Leeds whilst Kevin Sinfield also scored his first try for the Rhinos.

2000 – Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants 12 Leeds Rhinos 20

A late try from forward Graham Mackay secured a 20-12 win over the Giants in 2000. Keith Senior, David Barnhill and Richie Blackmore all scored for Dean Lance’s side, who extended a 12 match winning run in the league.

2009 – Huddersfield Giants 6 Leeds Rhinos 34

Only Michael Lawrence scored for the home side in 2009, with Brent Webb leading the Rhinos to a convincing 34-6 result. Two tries from full back Webb as well as scores for Ryan Hall, Danny McGuire and Matt Diskin gave the Rhinos their seventh win of the season.

2011 – Huddersfield Giants 28 Leeds Rhinos 34

A hat trick from Zak Hardaker knocked Huddersfield out of the Play Offs in 2011, as the Rhinos took a step closer to Old Trafford with a 34-28 win. Further tries from Ben Jones-Bishop and two from Brent Webb secured Leeds’ place in the semi finals.

2015 – Huddersfield Giants 16 Leeds Rhinos 20

There was late drama in 2015 as Ryan Hall secured the League Leaders Shield with the last play of the game. Jermaine McGillvary and Jamie Ellis both scored to overturn Stevie Ward’s early try before Tom Briscoe locked the scores up. With the clock ticking down, Leeds had to produce a moment of magic….
