Rugby League fans are being advised to plan their journeys ahead of the Betfred Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford this Saturday (7 October).

75,000 fans from West Yorkshire are expected to attend as Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers contest the season ending finale which kicks-off at 6pm.

Prior to this, the Fan Zone will be open from 1.30pm, with a stage hosted by Rugby AM, with live music, giveaways, partner activities plus food and drink. Fans should arrive at Old Trafford by at least 5pm as enhanced security and bag checks will be in operation.

In preparation for the final, there will be extra services across the train and tram network with Metrolink providing additional capacity for the event at Old Trafford and Northern rail operating special match day services direct to the ground.

Direct rail services will operate to and from Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly from West Yorkshire.

Metrolink event staff will also be on hand to help customers with their travel needs. TfGM and Metrolink – along with event organisers and operators – will also be using their social media accounts on the day to update passengers on any issues affecting travel.

Additionally, the road network – in particular the M62 – is likely to be much busier than normal due to the volume of traffic. Attendees may wish to take advantage of Greater Manchester’s free park and ride facilities and complete their journey by public transport. The Etihad Campus park and ride facility is the nearest to the Westbound M62 and has hundreds of spaces and direct tram connections to Old Trafford.

TfGM’s Transport and Event Planning Lead, John Fryer, said: “We’ve been working closely with operators to plan for the day and while all modes of transport have boosted their capacity, services and stations will be busier than usual.

“Park and Ride facilities will be strengthened across GM locations prior to the event, along with a queuing system in operation on rail and tram services following the game.

“We want everyone coming into the region for the final to have a great time.

“Our advice is for people to plan their journey in advance and allow extra time, especially when it comes to getting home – so please do not bank on catching the last train, tram or bus.”

Betfred’s Super League’s Executive Director, Roger Draper, said: “We are delighted to be back at the iconic ground of Old Trafford for the Super League Grand Final this Saturday.

“I know the fans will be turning out in large numbers to support their teams so I’d like to thank TfGM for planning ahead and putting in place the transport options to ensure everyone can get to and from the match swiftly and safely.

“I encourage everyone attending to plan their journey and allow themselves extra time so they don’t miss one minute of what is set to be a great event. I hope everyone has a brilliant day.”
