Rhinos and Warriors fight for home semi final this Friday

Final placings in the Betfred Women's Super League will be decided this weekend as teams enter the final week of the regular season. For both Leeds and Wigan, who face off at The Brick Community Stadium on Friday night (KO 5.30pm), there is an extra incentive to win too, as the winner would have a strong chance of hosting a semi final at the end of the month.

Here's more about the fixture:

Opposition Preview

Wigan's hopes of playing a home Play Off game hangs in the balance as Denis Bett's side sit fourth in the Betfred Women's Super League table, two points behind Leeds and York Valkyrie. Although it's not an impossible feat, the Warriors have shown this season that they can be a difficult opponent to overcome, whether they're playing home or away.

Off the back of two semi final finishes in 2022 and 2023, Betts took charge of the side this season hoping to take them a step further towards winning their first major trophy since 2018. With Anna Davies, Mary Coleman and Vicky Molyneux headlining the returning squad members from 2023, along with the additions of Ellise Derbyshire and Emma Knowles from Leigh Leopards, Brogan Evans from Salford and Alice Fisher from Bradford, the Warriors got out of the gates quickly with a spotless run through the group stages and quarter finals of the Challenge Cup before they won their first four league games against Barrow, Featherstone, Huddersfield and Warrington to move top of the table.

St Helens were the only side to shake the Warriors as the season hit the halfway mark as the Red Vee recorded wins over Wigan both home and away, but the Warriors continued to keep up their fight in the top four, particularly with an 18-10 triumph against York in July. Recent defeats against the Valkyrie and Leeds though has seen the side drop to fourth, but a win over Leeds this week would mark a new step in the side's development, as they haven't won a home match against the Rhinos in Super League history.

Davies has had a career best season in the outside backs as the centre has found the try line 26 times in a year, which is up from six tries in 2023. She was the only Wigan player to earn England honours too for the mid-season international against France. On the opposite wing, Derbyshire has also had a standout season as she's scored 14 tries in her first year in Super League.

The club were also bolstered by the return of Georgia Wilson mid-season, as the full back returned from Australia where she played for Souths Logan Magpies and Norths Devils since 2023.
