Local school children inspired by Leeds Marathon success

Following the success of the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon earlier this month year one children from Weetwood Primary School have been running a mini marathon by completing 7 miles over 7 days to raise money for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND appeal.

Burrow’s contribution as a player for the Rhinos and for his efforts to raise awareness and money for the MND community have inspired the children to support this as part of their R.E. work. One of the house teams at the school is also named after the Rhinos legend. 

Speaking about the children's challenge, Sara Westlake, Deputy Head Teacher at Weetwood said:  "This challenge started out as a small fundraiser, which linked to the children's work in R.E. about how to care for others.  The children have exceeded all of our expectations over the last seven days; they have shown huge amounts of resilience, determination and kindness throughout each mile they have run. We are so proud of them. 

"The children were inspired by the Rob Burrow Marathon, which happened in our community and they have raised an amazing amount of money to support the Rob Burrow Centre for MND appeal”.

Earlier this week Rhinos stars Aidan Sezer and David Fusitu’a joined Schools & Engagement Lead Ian Wilson at the school to congratulate the children on their efforts. 

Wilson added: “We are delighted to support the amazing children from Weetwood Primary School in their efforts to raise money for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND appeal. It is inspiring to see children who are so young making such a positive difference and for the determination and hard work they have shown in doing it. It was a pleasure to visit the school and to see them complete one of their miles.”
