Leeds Rhinos Director of Rugby Kevin Sinfield says the changes he and James Lowes are putting in place are having an impact on the squad however he admitted it will help the process even more if the Rhinos can get a win against Wakefield on Friday night at Emerald Headingley, kick off 7.45pm.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Sinfield said, “I said a week ago that I believed there was enough talent in our dressing room to give us something and get the results we need this season and I still believe that. Fundamentally, the team had lost some direction and the values it takes to be a Leeds Rhino and that is something we have worked particularly hard on this week. The players have been fantastic but ultimately we will be judged by our result on Friday night; we need a win. The sooner we can get that win, it will start to reinforce the messages that the coaching staff are giving the squad.

“To be a Leeds Rhinos player or member of staff requires a special spirit and I could feel that we had lost some of that.  It takes a real character to do themselves justice when they are at this club. We had lost some of that and we need to get it back.

“We have been working hard to add a couple of players to our squad to boost the numbers we have available but they may not be finalised in time for Friday’s game.

“Carl Ablett will skipper the side on Friday night as part of a new four man leadership group that will help nurture a new group of leaders for when our captain Kallum Watkins returns next season. Carl is a big part of this club and has been a big part of where this club has been in the past. He is really important to our squad and I am sure he will do a great job tomorrow along with Mitch Garbutt and Ash Handley, who also both come back in,” added Sinfield.

“At this club, through difficult times we stand and fight together and we need that more than ever. Our fans know that I am sure, they will come out on Friday night and support the boys. I know we are all desperate for the result but it is going to take time. We are doing everything we can to ensure we perform tomorrow,” added the Director of Rugby.
