Sinfield aims to bring MND community together with latest challenge

Kevin Sinfield and his team will once again hit the streets of the UK and Republic of Ireland this December to raise money and awareness for those impacted by motor neurone disease.

Kevin, who along with his team have already raised over £10 million with five previous challenges, is set to run seven ultra marathons in seven days across seven cities or regions. Again, this will include an Extra Mile event where members of the MND community will join Kev for one mile each day from 1st to 7th December 2025. Each day will be broken down into 7km blocks that Sinfield must complete inside the hour, before setting off on the next leg on the hour.

This year, Kevin and the team will visit new locations that could be overlooked by major events so the MND community in each know they are not forgotten. The name for this years challenge is 7 in 7: Together.

The challenge will start on Monday 1st December as the team arrive in East Anglia, running from Bury St Edmunds to Ipswich in tribute to former Ipswich Town striker Marcus Stewart, who is living with MND.

On 2nd December, the team will return to the Republic of Ireland. Back in 2023, Kevin was joined by legendary Irish broadcaster Charlie Bird in Dublin before Charlie passed away after his battle with MND in March 2024. This time the 7 in 7 team will arrive in Cork with the Irish MND Association who once again are one of the beneficiaries from the challenge. The day will also see the team remember former Warrington Rugby League player and Munster Rugby Union coach Paul Darbyshire, who died in 2011 from MND.

On 3rd December, the 7 in 7 challenge goes to Wales for a circuit of Swansea before moving back to England on 4th December to South Yorkshire and the challenge of an ultra-marathon around the hills of Sheffield. This day will finish at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) where groundbreaking research is being done to find treatment and hopefully ultimately a cure for MND, including work part-funded by previous challenges.

On 5th December, Kevin and the team will move to Cumbria with a run from Workington to Whitehaven in a region that is passionate about Rugby League that will ensure a warm reception even in the depths of winter.

The penultimate day will see the challenge move to Scotland with the late Doddie Weir always an inspiration for the team when they cross the Border. This day will start at the legendary golf course Carnoustie before travelling into Dundee.

The challenge will be completed as Kevin and the team return to Leeds for the first time since 2023 and the passing of Rob Burrow last year. This will start in North Yorkshire before culminating at AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium.

Six MND charities will once again benefit from the challenge. The MND Association are the main beneficiary along with donations to Leeds Hospitals Charity's support for the Rob Burrow Centre, Irish MND Association, Darby Rimmer Foundation, My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and MND Scotland.

Commenting on the challenge Sinfield said, "We have committed to doing seven annual challenges, as most people know the number seven is special to us because it is the number Rob wore. There are so many special memories from the previous challenges when people are so grateful that we have come to their village, town or city. With this penultimate challenge we wanted to continue that theme. The logistics around getting to each region in the timescale is part of our challenge but it is worth it when we receive such a warm welcome.

DAY 1 - MONDAY 1ST DECEMBER - EAST ANGLIA

The opening day of his latest annual challenge is on Monday 1st December 2025 when Kevin Sinfield and his team come to East Anglia for the first time.

The challenge will see Kevin Sinfield and the team run from Bury St Edmunds to Ipswich in tribute to former Ipswich Town striker Marcus Stewart, who is living with MND.

The public are asked to come out and support the challenge as it visits towns and villages but the public are not allowed to join the run for everyone’s safety and protection.

Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “I can’t wait to get started in Bury St Edmunds on 1st December. I know the rugby club have already made lots of plans to make sure it is our biggest ever send off and that will really kick start this years event.

"We chose to finish at Ipswich Town in tribute to our good friend Marcus Stewart. I know how highly Marcus is thought of at Ipswich and it will be brilliant to see Marcus and his wife Lou at the finish line. There are also members of the MND community in East Anglia who will be coming to meet us along the way and that is very much the theme for 2025 as we all come together to support each other."

DAY 2 - TUESDAY 2ND DECEMBER - CORK

On the second day of this year’s challenge, Sinfield and his team will once again return to the Republic of Ireland having visited Dublin in 2023 when they were joined by the legendary RTE broadcast Charlie Bird before he passed away from MND in 2024.

The visit to Cork has particularly significance for Sinfield and his team. Former Rugby League player and coach Paul Darbyshire passed away from MND in 2011 when he was on the Munster coaching team and is still fondly remembered by the Munster players of that era. A key member of Sinfield’s support team is physiotherapist David O’Sullivan. O’ Sullivan’s friend Cathal Deasy was a native of Kilbrittain in West Cork and sadly passed away in November 2024 after a three-year battle with MND.

Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “Our visits across the Irish Sea have always been one of the highlights of challenges in the last two years. It was so special to be joined by Charlie Bird in Dublin in 2023 and we had tremendous support in Belfast last year, especially meeting the family of former Antrim GAA footballer Anto Finnegan. We have some special connections to the city in our team. We can’t wait to get to Cork on 2nd December.”

DAY 3 - WEDNESDAY 3RD DECEMBER - SWANSEA

Kevin Sinfield’s annual 7 in 7 Challenge will return to Wales on 3rd December with Swansea joining Cardiff and Wrexham as finishing points in Sinfield’s epic fundraising challenges.

The MND fundraiser and former Rugby League player, will tackle an ultra marathon on Wednesday 3rd December, starting and finishing at Swansea.com Stadium.

The route will include stops at the DVLA, Dunvant RFC, Swansea Bay Sports Park and going through the historical home of Swansea rugby and cricket at St Helens. However, there will also be a special personal moment for Sinfield as the route takes in Gorseinon RFC, the birth place of legendary Leeds player Lewis Jones, who passed away in 2024.

Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “We are looking forward to returning to Wales after receiving such a warm welcome in Cardiff and Wrexham in recent years. I had the privilege of meeting Jason Bowen in Cardiff two years ago on our way around the city and I know the people of Swansea have given him a lot of support with his own battle with MND.

“I was pleased to hear that the route would take in Gorseinon. I knew Lewis Jones well as he attended nearly every Rhinos home game during my career. Our names were always linked because of our places in the history books at Leeds and it is nice that we are able to pay tribute to him as part of this challenge,” added Sinfield.

Jones and Sinfield are two of only five players to have led Leeds to Championship glory in over 130 years history of the club which Jones second only to Sinfield for goals and points for the club.

DAY 4 - THURSDAY 4TH DECEMBER - SHEFFIELD

Rugby League legend Kevin Sinfield will bring his 7 in 7: Together challenge to South Yorkshire on Thursday 4th December on the fourth day of his epic endurance challenge in support of the MND community with the visit to Sheffield holding special significance for research to find treatment and ultimately a cure for the degenerative disease.

Sinfield has raised over £10 million with his five previous challenges for those impacted by Motor Neurone Disease, inspired by his friend and former team mate Rob Burrow.  Part of that fundraising has been invested into research at University of Sheffield’s Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN).

Established in 2010, SITraN has become a leading force in neurological research, fostering breakthroughs by bringing together multi-disciplinary teams of scientists, clinicians, and patients. Their pioneering work has led to unprecedented improvements in understanding disease mechanisms, bringing new hope to millions. The ultra marathon around Sheffield will finish at SITraN.

The route will start at the home of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane before visiting Abbeydale, the home of Sheffield Collegiate CC and Sheffield RUFC, then Sheffield Tigers, calling at the English Institute of Sport and passed Hillsborough.

Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “I am pleased to be coming to Sheffield this year. We went through South Yorkshire back in 2021 but it was in the middle of the night! I know that Sheffield is a sports mad city whether that is cricket as the home of Michael Vaughan and Joe Root, rugby with union and league teams, snooker or the world class training facilities, not to mention being the home to the Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. I am sure we will get a warm welcome from the people of the steel city,

“I am particularly pleased to be finishing at SITraN to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of the researchers there and the work they are doing. It is a wonderful facility and it has been our honour to contribute to that work to find treatments and ultimately hopefully a cure for MND. I am looking forward to seeing the guys there at the finish line, thanking them for what they do and together we will continue to bang the drum for the MND community,” added Sinfield.

DAY 5 - FRIDAY 5TH DECEMBER - CUMBRIA

Rugby League legend Kevin Sinfield will break new ground in his epic annual challenges on the fifth day of the 2025 challenge as he heads to the Rugby League mad region of Cumbria.

On Friday 5th December on the fifth day of his epic endurance challenge in support of the MND community, Sinfield will run from Workington to Whitehaven visiting rugby clubs in the region on his way and he is expecting a warm welcome.

Heading south from Workington, Sinfield and his team will travel through High Harrington, Moresby, Wath Brow and Egremont on their way to Whitehaven.

Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “For me personally, this is a day I am looking forward to so much. I remember last year when we went to Hull and the reception the team and I received from the Rugby League family in that great city. Immediately we said we have to go to Cumbria in 2025. I have always been made to feel so welcome whenever I have visited.

“But there is also an important message behind our visit. There are people in areas like Cumbria living with MND who are not close to the resources and support that obviously comes with being near a city. Our theme of 7 in 7: Together is about letting those people and their loved ones know that they are not forgotten and we all stand alongside them.  I know Gary McKee did an incredible job a few years ago with his fundraising for another important cause in the region and I am delighted that Gary is going to join us at some point in the day to show us the way!” added Sinfield.

DAY 6 - SATURDAY 6TH DECEMBER - DUNDEE

On the penultimate day of his 2025 7 in 7: Together Challenge, Kevin Sinfield and his team will head north of the border to Scotland when they run from the famous Carnoustie golf club into Dundee, finishing on the pitch before kick off of Dundee FC’s William Hill Premiership clash with Aberdeen at Dens Park on Saturday 6th December.

Sinfield and his team will run from Carnoustie following the River Tay into Dundee, circling around the city before going through the centre and heading to the finish line at Dens Park.

Visits to Scotland have featured in the last three of Sinfield’s epic annual challenges inspired by the friendship with Doddie Weir and the support the Scottish rugby legend gave to Rob Burrow after his diagnosis with MND in 2019. Sadly, both men are no longer with us but that bond continues to inspire Sinfield and his team.

There are also current connections between MND and the city with Dundee Sheriff Alastair Carmichael speaking publicly last year about his own MND diagnosis back in February 2024. Two of the six beneficiaries from the week long challenge have Scottish connections with My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and MND Scotland both befitting.

Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “Scotland is always special for us and, having visited Edinburgh, the Borders and Glasgow, it will be lovely to come to Dundee. I’m looking forward to seeing Desperate Dan as I know we won’t be far from the finish then!

“I know it is a 3pm kick off against Aberdeen so we will be keeping an eye on the clock to make sure we get there in time. We have some wonderful partners for our challenge from Scotland who have been so generous in the support of our team and the MND community and we are very grateful. Naturally, Doddie will not be far from our thoughts all day. The penultimate day is always our toughest but I’m sure our memories of Doddie will keep a smile on our faces and hopefully the sound of some bagpipes as well will spur us on,” added Sinfield.

DAY 7 - SUNDAY 7TH DECEMBER - LEEDS

Kevin Sinfield will conclude his 7 in 7: Together on Sunday 7th December when he runs into AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium, the scene of some of his finest hours during his glittering playing career. Sinfield and his team will run from Queen Ethelburga’s school near York, the route takes the team through Green Hammerton, Cattal, Wetherby, Linton, East Rigton and Bardsey before entering Leeds through Moortown and Meanwood.

Sinfield will then set off the inaugural Leeds Santa Dash at Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley campus before completing the final Extra Mile with members of the MND community at Leeds Beckett. Sinfield and the team will then set off for AMT Headingley to join the Santas to celebrate the completion of the 7 in 7: Together Challenge. Commenting on the latest challenge Sinfield said, “It is great to be coming back to Leeds for the first time since 2023. It will be a very special day, especially with us being able to add a mass participation element to the final day with the Santa Dash. AMT Headingley holds so many special memories for me and it will be wonderful to arrive into the stadium with our 7 in 7 team and conclude this year’s challenge.
