During his playing career Barry played at stand-off, scrum-half and hooker and represented Wales internationally on four occasions.  A record breaking goal kicker, he started his career at Doncaster and went on to play for Wakefield Trinity, Dewsbury, Castleford, Widnes, Batley and Keighley.  At Doncaster he gained promotion to the First Division and at Dewsbury he won the Trans-Pennine Cup, and First Division title and was a First Division Grand Final runner-up.

He moved to Keighley as player-coach in 2005 and in both 2008 and 2009 he was nominated for Championship One coach of the year. After leading Keighley to promotion, he was unable to keep them in the Championship, he then moved to Crusaders to become assistant to his former Wales team mate Iestyn Harris for the 2011 Super League season. He then moved to Hunslet in late 2011 and remained with the club until 2016 before becoming Brian McDermott’s full time assistant coach.  As well as his roles with the first team, Barry has a key role to play in the club’s Coach Education programme with the Leeds Rhinos Foundation to raise coaching standards in the community game.
