York City Knights Ladies 4 Leeds Rhinos Women 14

Leeds Rhinos secured their second win of the 2021 Betfred Women’s Super League Play Offs with a tight 14-4 win over York City Knights at the LNER Community Stadium. Sophie Nuttall, Fran Goldthorp and Eloise Hayward scored the tries for the Rhinos, who maintained their unbeaten record in the league this season.

From kick off, the home side forced Leeds to defend and also grabbed the opening try of the game. Liv Whitehead dropped the game’s first major chance from a Katie Langan cross field kick before a knock on by Sam Hulme and head high tackle on Daisy Sanderson shortly after invited more pressure on the Rhinos. Aiming to grab the opening try with the Rhinos on the ropes, an offload from former Rhino Rhiannion Marshall was batted on quickly by Emma Hardy for Olivia Wood to score the first try of the game.

The Rhinos had the chance to respond with a nice wide movement for Tara Moxon but the winger threw the ball back inside for an absent Fran Goldthorp. A knock on by Tamzin Renouf opened up another opportunity for Leeds but Lucy Murray’s drive for the line was the closest the Rhinos came.

Orla McCallion’s sin binning on 17 minutes saw Leeds go down to 12 players but Lois Forsell’s side did well to keep York out, thanks mainly to a knock on by Wood metres away from the try line.

Despite being a player down, the Rhinos managed to level the score after applying pressure on York since McCallion’s yellow card. Murray almost broke free in another good drive by the young second rower and minutes later, Sophie Robinson was posted through a gap by Winfield-Hill, only to be denied by Renouf and Olivia Howarth. Further ill-discipline by York, gave the visitors their chance to equalise through Sophie Nuttall. Moving down towards the corner with Aimee Staveley and Chloe Kerrigan, an acute kick by Winfield-Hill for the in goal area allowed Nuttall and Eloise Hayward to chase and the winger did well to win the race to plant it down before the dead ball line.

A close final ten minutes could have seen tries for both sides, but nothing would give as they went into the break at 4-4. A good, high bomb on the fifth tackle by Winfield-Hill allowed Murray, Goldthorp and Moxon to put Whitehead back over her own goal line and force a repeat set, which didn’t come to any more points. The Knights then tried to benefit from a knock on by Robinson with a shift wide but as Ashleigh Hyde looked to break away, Hayward made a brilliant cover tackle that put the winger into touch.

The Rhinos didn’t make it easy for themselves at the start of the second 40 minutes but soon got into their rhythm with two tries short of the hour mark.

York had repeat sets on the Leeds line inside the first ten minutes of the new half but sloppy errors cost the home side; Marshall coming within metres of scoring thanks to good defence from Sam Hulme and Caitlin Beevers.

Few opportunities surround both sides since then but it would be the magic of Goldthorp that inspired the Rhinos on the scoreboard. A break by the centre caught Savannah Andrade and Whitehead napping and Goldthorp managed to make 40 metres to close Leeds in on the try line. A further penalty for offside from a Winfield-Hill kick gave the Rhinos more possession and as they shifted the ball wide through the Leeds captain, Robinson managed to squeeze the ball away for Hayward to score in the corner.

No sooner had she aided Hayward’s try, Goldthorp wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to score herself. From the restart, McCallion managed to find room towards the touchline and released Goldthorp through the challenge of Andrade and into the backfield. Shrugging off the challenge of full back Georgie Hetherington, the centre added Leeds’ third try of the game under the posts. Winfield-Hill converted to make the score 14-4.

There was a long break in play after Georgie Hetherington clashed heads with Caitlin Beevers. The full back was stretchered from the field but indicated she was ok. York were the quickest to react following the break and should have scored through Renouf, but the centre was hit well by Winfield-Hill and lost the ball under pressure from the half back.

York kept on trying to add points in the final 15 minutes but couldn’t come up with the all important finishes. After Robinson patted Hardy’s fifth tackle kick dead, Leeds did well to defend their line against the Knights’ forward pack before Sinead Peach knocked the ball on on while trying to kick ahead for herself and the Rhinos survived. A break by Moxon with minutes on the clock looked dangerous after the winger was herded over the sideline, setting up a close ending but Leeds stood strong and took home a ten point victory.
