Wigan Warriors Women U19s 10 – Leeds Rhinos Womens U19s 42

Leeds Rhinos Women’s U19s got their 2019 season off to a winning start with a convincing victory against Wigan Warriors U19s at Orrell St James.

Head Coach Matty Bullough handed debuts to Courtney Pursglove and Lucy Murray and also included Francessca Goldthorp in the side, after the former Guiseley Rangers player had made her first team debut at the weekend against Castleford Tigers.

Lauren Harvey got the Rhinos off to a great start with the first try of the game and the young side ran in a further seven tries to wrap up the win.  Paige Webster and Shauna Asquith crossed for a try apiece and Abbie Spencer and Orla McCallion grabbed a brace.  Murray capped off a fine debut with the final try of the game and Spencer added five conversions.

Speaking after the game Bullough said: “It was a great way to get the season underway and it was a great experience and learning curve for the girls travelling midweek after a day at college or work and they dealt with the change in situation well.

“We opened the game with an early score and gained confidence on the back of that which led to a solid first half performance.

“We went in at half time leading by 12 points to 6. It was a solid start but due to the early lead and confidence we were over playing slightly so the message for the second half was to be direct with our play.

“The girls were fantastic in the second half, direct, clinical and ruthless. We will take positives from the game but are looking forward to working on areas where we could have been better in preparation for our next game when we welcome St Helens on Sunday 9th June.”
