Wigan Warriors Women 12 Leeds Rhinos Women 48

A relentless performance from the Rhinos saw them run in nine tries as they ran out 48-12 winners over a spirited Wigan Warriors side. Zoe Hornby and Caitlin Beevers were the pick of the try scorers as they both picked up a hat trick of tries. There were also tries for Sophie Robinson, Hanna Butcher and Elle Frain.

Leeds got off to a perfect start as they scored within the first 5 minutes. The Rhinos were gifted possession through a handling error and from the resulting scrum Zoe Hornby barged her way over the line to score.  Poor handling would become the theme of the game for the Wigan Warriors as Leeds scored again off the back of a scrum after 8 minutes. This time strong carries compressed the Wigan defence before Winfield-Hill spun it out wide to Beevers who dived over the line for her first of the game.

The Rhinos wouldn’t have it all their own way as Wigan hit back to close the gap to 6 points. On the last tackle the Wigan halfback regathered her own chip before finding her centre Anna Davies in space to score. Any notions of a fightback were quickly quashed as Hornby scored her second just minutes later. Once again she was simply too strong for the Wigan defence as she forced her way over under the posts.

Leeds cemented their dominant position heading into halftime with two tries in the final ten minutes. Firstly, Sophie Robinson was able to cross in the corner after catching a pinpoint kick from Courtney Winfield-Hill on the last tackle. Then with two minutes to go Hanna Butcher scored. Stand in half back Sam Hulme was able to manufacture space for the centre who juggled the ball before touching down to score.

After a tough opening stanza, life didn’t get easier for the home side as they conceded within a minute of the second half kicking off. Leeds regathered a short kick off and from the resulting set the ball was worked to the right where Caitlin Beevers crashed over her opposite number to score. Wigan would hit back for their second of the game 5 minutes later through Mary Coleman. A line break from Carys Marsh had the Rhinos defence scrambling and they were powerless to stop Coleman driving over the line on the next play.

The first of the two hat tricks was completed by Zoe Hornby on the 52nd minute as she once again scored under the posts. This time the loose forward would be able to cross untouched as the stretched Wigan defence couldn’t get near her. The try scorer would then turn provider as Elle Frain scored what was perhaps the try of the game. A kick on the last from Winfield-Hill was caught by Hornby who somehow managed to offload the ball as she was tackled to the waiting Elle Frain. All the second rower had to do was dive over the line to score.

A quiet final 15 minutes was punctuated by Caitlin Beevers completing her hat trick with 9 minutes to go. A break from Adaoha Akwiwu drove the Rhinos down the pitch and into the Wigan 20m zone. The ball was then worked right to Beevers who wouldn’t be denied of her third try despite the best efforts of two WIgan defenders.

Next up for the Leeds Rhinos Women is the return fixture against the Wigan Warriors as part of a double header with the mens team who will also face Wigan Warriors
