Wigan Warriors 28 Leeds Rhinos 10

Leeds Rhinos lost out to league leaders Wigan after two late scores sealed the win for the Warriors in a tight contest.

Leeds Rhinos played their first ‘on the road’ fixture since the coronavirus lockdown with a trip against to St Helens to take on Wigan Warriors.

Leeds Head Coach Richard Agar was looking for a response from his side after the disappointing result against Champions St Helens seven days earlier and the Rhinos were certainly improved but ultimately fell short against the league leaders.

Wigan had the better of the early exchanges and had a couple of half chances before Liam Farrell found space near the line and powered his way over after sixteen minutes. Zak Hardaker added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead.

The Rhinos got themselves back into the game after that and thought they had scored when Luke Briscoe went over in the corner only for the score to be ruled out by the video referee for an infringement in the build up.

Leeds however did managed to maintain the pressure and they crossed for a  try after 23 minutes when Matt Prior got away from an initial tackle and then offloaded one handed round his back to put Tom Briscoe over in the corner. Rhyse Martin’s attempted conversion hit the post and rebounded away to leave the score at 6-4.

The game was nip and tuck after that as both teams look to find a way through. Leeds had the better of the territory but Wigan defended their line well and then caught the Rhinos out in the closing minutes of the first half when Wigan counter attacked and Bevan French collected a kick ahead to race through and score between the posts. Hardaker added the conversion to make it 12-4 at the break.

Wigan extended their lead in the second half when Hardaker and French combined to put Manfredi over in the corner. Hardaker missed the conversion attempt so it remains 16-4.

The Rhinos cut the lead when Liam Sutcliffe marked his return to the Rhinos side with a try when he spotted a gap near the line and forced his way through following fast play from the Rhinos in the build up. Rhyse Martin added the conversion to make it 16-10 after 65 minutes.

Leeds had a good spell of pressure after that but could not make it pay and were then reduced to 12 men with eight minutes to go when Luke Gale was sin binned after a tackle. Hardaker went for goal from the penalty but missed however Wigan finished strongly to seal the win with two late tries.

Bibby crossed after an error by Luke Briscoe coming away from his own line and then French won the race to a through kick to score between the posts. Hardaker added the conversion with the final play of the game to make it 28-10.
