Wasps Netball 57 Leeds Rhinos Netball 52

Rhinos netball travelled to CBS arena with the hopes of backing up their previous impressive win against Team Bath last weekend within the spring showdown. Wasps Netball were also hoping for a win in their second double header weekend after a large deficit to Manchester Thunder just yesterday again at the CBS arena.

Wasps took the first centre pass of the game, Magee tipped the ball early and after some very tight defence within the circle Airey earned herself the ball allowing Burger to put the first goal on the board. The game was quickly back level just seconds later as ball was quickly lost from a Rhinos centre pass 1-1. Hall found Burger open under the post to keep the game level 2-2. Dunn picked up her own rebound for a second opportunity at goal as well as converting a Rhinos centre pass which gave Wasps and early lead 4-2. Wasps were then forced wide off their sideline, Rhinos built on the ball and after some super speed from Grierson Rhinos were in shooting position, a missed shot gave Wasps possession but Magee had other ideas picking the ball back up for her side. Brie came out quick for the next centre pass and netted her first of the game to bring it back level at 4 all. Wasps took a turnover but a footwork call was later made further down court, Burger took the ball to goal.

Each team continued to convert from their own centre passes to keep the game level. Hall popped a high ball into Burger who got her own rebound then earned herself another goal. Burger was strong on the hold on Huckle and continued adding goals to her tally. Grierson played a quick one two, Burger picked up the rebound 10-10. Oyesola picked up a loose ball and after displaying patience on the transition, Burger moved into the path of the ball 11-12. Wasps earned the ball from a Rhino centre pass but Rhinos quickly forced a Wasps error to regain possession. Grierson and Hall combined patiently but there was another missed shot from Rhinos. Airey tipped the rebound but a contact was called on the circle edge.  Dunn took the last goal of the first quarter giving the home side Wasps Netball a one goal advantage 14-13.

Rhinos took the first centre pass of quarter two and took it quickly to goal via Burger 14-14. Grierson worked herself from the backline out to the edge and then back to the baseline to take a shot, Burger picked up the rebound and netted the shot 15-15. Oyesola tipped the ball forcing Wasps off the backline, once the backline was set Rhinos continued to apply pressure. Airey then took a well earned backline for Rhinos and Grierson finished it off with the shot giving her side a three goal lead 15-18. Burger netted another and remained strong on the body of Huckle allowing her to extend Rhinos lead to five 16-21. Airey came out on the hunt for ball forcing Wasps off the sideline, Hall picked up a loose ball shortly after, Hall quickly fed Burger 16-22. Huckle won ball from Burger and the gap was to four 18-22.

Keenan moved into the GK position, Airey moved to GD with Oyesola moved to the bench. Burger continued to be strong against Huckle 21-25. Grierson received a quick ball and passed it off into Burger, Burger was strong on the pass and popped another through the net 22-26. Huckle was called for an obstruction, but Wasps then forced Rhinos off their backline to bring the game back to one 27-28. Clarke picked up a dropped ball within the circle which allowed Burger to add one more 27-29. A long high ball was placed into Burger but she chose to pass out. Hall was called for a replayed ball and after a final second contact call, Dunn got another go at goal to level the game entering the half time break 29-29.

At half time Tracy Robinson made one change which saw Walker take to court in the WD position. Tight defensive pressure from Wasps saw the ball quickly go off the backline. It was Wasps that took the first two goals of the quarter after Rhinos fumbled possession and gifted the ball to the home side 31-29. Rhinos caused a held ball against Wasps and quickly took both a Wasps centre and one of their own to goal to re level the game 31 a piece. Keenan came out on the fly to earn herself the ball from Christian, Burger continued to be strong under the post to give her side a two goal lead 31-33. Both sides remained determined and after end to end play Rhinos held onto their two goal lead 33-35. Walker applied strong defensive pressure and forced Wasps wide off the backline.

Wasps responded with high levels of pressure which resulted in Rhinos going off the sideline. It was then Huckles turn to go out on the fly for the ball and quickly earned herself possession but Keenan came from within her circle to the top of her defensive third to regain possession for her Rhinos side 34-36. The next ball was too quick for Grierson and as Burger went to pick up the loose ball she was called for contact. Burger quickly put her arms up to add pressure to the next phase of play and forced a held ball, Rhinos transitioned well and Burger was successful again under the post to extend Rhinos lead to four 35-39. Hall ended the quarter by finding Burger but their was a little too much on the shot allowing Wasps just enough time to take the ball to goal before the end of the quarter 40-42.

For the final 15 minutes Oyesola picked the GD bib back up. Rhinos instantly forced a Wasps error and Burger pulled the ball down from a significant height away from Huckle allowing her to add to Rhinos tally 40-43. Hall and Clarke played the ball on the circle edge between each other but after two missed shots from Rhinos, Wasps had possession. After a tricky transition Wasps found Dunn 41-43. The game was quickly back level at 44 all. Clarke remained calm and Burger got her own rebound after a little confusion in regards to the umpires call 45-45. The game remained level until Huckle got a tip from within the circle, Oyesola then tipped the ball off the sideline but Wasps took it to goal 48-46.

Huckle got in front of Burger to tip the ball again Airey then entered the court at GD and Rushton entered the game at GA. Wasps were patient on their transition and after further errors from Rhinos, Wasps held a five goal lead 51-46. Powell-Davies tipped the ball into the hands of Huckle and after a quick transition Christian found Dunn under the post to add one more 52-46. Clarke was quick to get the ball back to the centre circle for a Rhino centre pass, Rhinos continued patient on the shot and Rushton got her first 53-47. Rushton and Burger cemented their combination and worked well as a duo within the circle, however the strong defensive unit of Huckle and Powell-Davies proved too strong. Wasps finished the game with a final long shot to secure a five goal win 57-52.
