Wakefield Trinity Ladies 6 Leeds Rhinos Women 74

A slow start from the Rhinos saw them quickly ramp up the pressure on the home side and rampaging forward Aimee Staveley opened the scoring. Butcher took the ball to the line and dropped off the second rower and a superb angled run, Staveley punching through the hole and bumping off the fullback to score to the right of the posts inside 10 minutes, Gaines with the conversion.

Wakefield looked to be on the verge of levelling the game when a Pryce kick was picked off by Fran Goldthorp, the explosive centre accelerating away but was clawed down on halfway by a covering Whitehead. Goldthorp finding her feet quickly and playing the ball for Caitlin Beevers who tiptoed her way down the right sideline before rounding under the posts, Gaines making no mistake from in front to push the Rhinos out to a 12-0 lead.

Wakefield would further compound their problems from the kick off when they kicked out on the full. The Rhinos crossed on just the third tackle as Tash Gaines linked up with halves partner Hanna Butcher who double pumped the pass to Elle Frain, the nimble second rower racing through the gap to score out on the left edge, Gaines unable to convert.

The Rhinos improved their lead in the 27th minute, a strong set putting the visitors within touching distance of the Wakefield line. Hulme distributed the ball from dummy half to Butcher who teased the line and drew the attention of two defenders before releasing Goldthorp who cruised through the hole created and scored on the right edge. Tasha Gaines dragging the kick to the right of the posts.

Leeds had found their rhythm by the half hour mark, Gaines and Butcher dictating play. Gaines took the ball to the line on the left edge before releasing Caitlin Beevers who raced through the line and put on a huge left foot step to go clear of the covering fullback and score under the posts, Gaines converting from in front to push Leeds out to a 26-0 lead.

In the final play of the first half the homeside would finally crack the Rhinos, a Swain kick allowed to bounce in the in-goal area and the kick sitting up kindly for Pryce to score, Taylor converting to make it 26-6 at the half.

Tara Moxon set the tone for the second half when she put a huge hit on the Wakefield receiver who spilled the ball and gifted the Rhinos strong field position. Sam Hulme with fantastic service to the blind side for  Goldthorp who got the better of her opposite number one on one and crossed for her second of the game, Gaines unable to convert.

Caitlin Beevers would show her international pedigree just minutes later. Beevers with ball in hand on the last tackle of the set in a narrow channel, the fullback then rapidly accelerated through two defenders and ghosted past her Wakefield counterpart to score under the posts, Gaines on hand to add the extras.

Goldthorp joined Beevers on a hat-trick in the 47th minute. Butcher gave the dynamic back early ball and Goldthorp stepped in and out of heavy traffic before finding a gap and stepping the fullback with a huge left foot step taking her under the posts. Gaines with her 5th successful conversion of the game taking the Rhinos out to a 42-6 lead.

Lucy Murray had her first try in Rhinos colours when Wakefield were unable to gather in a hoisted Gaines kick, Goldthorp swooping on the loose ball and racing to the line but denied 10 metres short but squeezing out an offload to Murray in support to cross out on the right edge. The kick missed by Gaines out wide.

Zoe Hornby laid the platform for Goldthorp’s fourth try of the game, the powerhouse forward punching her way through the line and taking the Rhinos within 10 metres of the line and winning a quick play the ball, Butcher handing off to Goldthorp who skipped away from would be tacklers to score, Gaines with the conversion from the right of the posts.

Hanna Butcher would be rewarded for her classy teams’ efforts as the halfback was on the receiving end of a Zoe Hornby offload close to the line, Butcher showing the ball to the line before slicing through the right edge defence to score. The scoreline 60-6.

Goldthorp was not done for the day just yet as she scored a career best 5th try of the game. McCallion shooting out of dummy half and splitting the defence but releasing the young prodigy to shake off her opposite number and cross down the right channel. Gaines’ kick dropping just under the bar.

Orla McCallion had terrorised the Wakefield defence with her speed and intelligence out of dummy half all day long and the classy number nine would show her prowess once more. McCallion showed fantastic Rugby league IQ as she stepped right off the play the ball to create the numbers before linking up with Butcher who found Kerrigan steaming into a hole and over the fullback. Gaines’ kick just off the mark as Leeds went into the final 10 minutes 68-6 up.

Hornby no longer content with setting up tries decided it was time for one of her own, the front rower taking off and exploding through tacklers and into the backfield before dummying to Elle Frain in support to take her clear of the fullback to score under the posts. Gaines on hand to convert with the last kick of the game. The Rhinos extended their unbeaten streak to four games with a 74-6 win.
