Leeds Rhinos Women booked their place in the Coral Women’s Challenge Cup Final following a tough semi-final clash against St Helens at the Total Wicked Stadium.

St Helens opened the scoring after 19 minutes with Jodie Cunningham dummying and diving over the line from close range on the back of Chantelle Crows strong run. Beth Stott converted to put Saints 6-0 ahead.

Ten minutes later, Stott converted a penalty kick just from the right of the sticks around twelve metres out to extend the lead to 8-0.

The Rhinos were hit back with just six minutes to go until half time. Shannon Lacey powered her way over the line from close range to score the Rhinos first try making the score 8-4 at half time.

Adam Cuthbertson’s team were dealt a blow on fifty-nine minutes when Hanna Butcher was shown yellow and sent to the bin for slowing the Saints play of the ball from an Emily Rudge break. Stott was successful in converting the penalty conversion and increasing Saints lead to 10-4.

The Rhinos’ first try of the second half came from a great play on the short side with a measured grubber kick from Courtney Hill that Sophie Nuttall was able to get on the end and then put the ball down. Hill levelled the game at 10-10 with a magnificent conversion from the touch line with less than ten minutes remaining of the game.

Not long after Caitlin Beevers caught the ball on her own line and broke through the Saints defensive line to race the full length of the pitch to arguably score the try of the game to make the score 10-14. Hill extended the Rhinos lead to 16-10 with another successful conversion.

The team did enough to hold on for the win to earn their place in the Women’s Challenge Cup Final at the University of Bolton against Castleford Tigers Women in a repeat of last year’s final.
