Leeds Rhinos surrendered to a late flurry of tries from Salford Red Devils to lose out 26-12 having lead 12-8 with fifteen minutes to go.

The Rhinos were twice reduced to 12 men with Bodene Thompson and Zane Tetevano sin binned in each half.

The visitors had taken the lead after just eleven minutes when Mikolaj Oledzki was the quickest to react to a spilled ball by Salford, the prop stooped low to pick up the ball and dive over the line next to the post. Rhyse Martin added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead.

The home side thought they had struck back after 14 minutes when Joe Burgess slid over in the corner. The final decision went to video referee Liam Moore who spotted some excellent defence from Jack Walker. The Leeds full never gave up and raced across field to drag Burgess’ boot into touch as he dived for the line.

Salford did eventually level the score, this time on the opposite wing. After a spell of pressure on the Rhinos lin, Brodie Croft spotted space out wide and Ken Sio had a simple run in to score after gathering the low kick.

Possession then turned again back in favour of the Rhinos as Sezer kicked behind the Salford defence to earn his side a repeat set. The visitors made the pressure count as Sezer throw a cut out pass to put Handley in space and the winger went over in the corner. Martin was unable to add the conversion from the touchline but the Rhinos led 10-6 after 30 minutes.

Leeds’ discipline was questioned in the final stages of the half as they conceded a number of set restarts at the ruck which eventually resulted in Bodene Thompson being sin binned in the final minute of the half as referee Liam Moore lost patience with the Rhinos. Sneyd kicked the subsequent penalty to cut the Rhinos lead at half time to 10-8.

However, the Rhinos came out after the interval in determined mood and actually had the better of the chances whilst at a numerical disadvantage.

But Leeds were back down to 12 men after 54 minutes when Tetevano was shown yellow for a high tackle. Salford looked to take advantage this time but a brilliant cover tackle by James Bentley stopped a certain try but also forced an error.

Jack Broadbent, making his first appearance of the season, then came up with a great piece of defence too to drag Lafai into touch. Leeds made the most of the chance when soon after Oledzki was stripped of the ball illegally and Martin extended the Rhinos lead to 12-8 after 65 minutes.

However, the Red Devils eventually hit back with a long range move. A kick from Sezer was caught by Joe Burgess behind his own try line and he took a quick tap 20. Oledzki did well to get back and stop the winger near the touchline but Salford moved the ball across the field and Atkin touched down on the opposite flank to level the score. Sneyd’s conversion gave Salford the lead for the first time in the game with 12 minutes to go but they were not finished there.

Elijah Taylor extended the lead with another try before former Rhino King Vuniyayawa broke clear and put Ryan Brierley over for a try between the posts. Sneyd converted both tries to complete the victory.
