Leeds Rhinos 2019 U16 and U15 squads

Leeds Rhinos Under 16s made it two wins from two with a 40-20 win against Newcastle Thunder at Kingston Park having led 22-6 at half time. Scrum half Jonah Parsons crossed for two tries as Mark Butterill’s team produced another strong performance after the opening game win over Wigan.

The Rhinos opened the scoring when prop Ajahni Wallace proved too strong near the line as he crashed over. The lead was increased when winger James King was put in space by full back Mackenzie Turner with a miss pass and he dived over in the corner to give the visitors a 10-0 lead after Sam Little missed his only kick at goal on the night with his conversion attempt from the touchline.

Newcastle hit back with their first try from Tyler Hepple however the Rhinos were soon back on the front foot when replacement Alfie Edgell supported a fine break by loose forward Levi Edwards before finishing off from 20 metres out.

The Rhinos fourth try of the first half came when Turner skipped round three would-be tacklers before racing clear to score between the posts. Little kicked his third conversion to give Leeds a 22-6 advantage at the break.

The visitors sealed the win with two tries at the start of the second half both from Parsons. The scrum half used quick thinking and even quicker footwork to catch the home side out. Firstly with a break from dummy half to get over from close range and then from 20 metres out, he initially beat the ruck defence before stepping around the last line of defence to score between the posts.

Credit should go to the Thunder youngsters, who refused to throw in the towel and came back with two tries of their own from Lennox Barry and Ryan Crossley however Leeds finally crossed for a seventh try when Parsons turned provider with a well timed pass to put Billy Davies into a gap and he powered through to score. Little kicked his sixth goal to give his side a 40-16 lead.

Newcastle had the last word when Ciaran Walker touched down from close range but the Rhinos were good value for their 40-20 victory.
