Match Report: York City Knights 6 Leeds Rhinos Women 50

Leeds Rhinos Women ran out 6-50 winners over the York City Knights Ladies and grabbed their second piece of silverware in 2018 after an impressive debut season in England’s elite Women’s division.

It was a scrappy opening to the game with York making life difficult for the Rhinos with there big aggressive pack, Leeds matching them hit for hit and eventually wearing the York defence down. It would be 11 minutes before the Rhinos would open their account, Shannon Lacey with the intital line break, Butcher finding Robinson to wrestle her way over from five metres out.

A huge break from Danielle Anderson would set the platform for the next try, the powerhouse forward splitting the York defence and backing herself to the line, unfortunately clawed down just short, a quick play the ball for Beevers at dummy half to find Suze Hill on the wing and the Rhinos doubling their advantage, Hill unable to convert.

The Rhinos Women’s player of the Year would prove exactly why she was deserving of the accolade with a brilliant individual try. Hanna Butcher exploding through the York line to show a clean pair of heels to escape the grasp of the pursuing defenders from halfway, Courtney Hill converting from the left of the posts to make it 0-14.

Leeds had began to punch holes in the York defensive line and make huge metres, a strong running line from Ellie Oldroyd would see her breaking down the left and tipping on for Hanna Butcher, Butcher supplying Robinson to streak home from 20 metres out and grab her second of the game, Courtney Hill converting to give Leeds a 0-20.

Leeds had clearly found their rhythm as Rhiannion Marshall spotted a gap at dummy half, the powerful forward with an incredible 45 metre solo effort to extend the Rhinos lead further, Courtney Hill converting once more, 0-26.

The Rhinos leading try scorer would add to her impressive total with yet another, Chloe Kerrigan powering down the York left edge and halted 10 metres shy of the line, a quick play the ball allowing Beevers to come firing out of dummy half and straightening up to split the York defence with her incredible pace and ground the ball despite the fullback’s best efforts, Hill once more on target with the boot to extend the Rhinos lead to 0-32, the scoreline remaining as such at the end of the half.

The Rhinos would make a fast start to the second half, York spilling a bobbling restart and handing Leeds possession in a dangerous spot. Beth Lockwood going hard and straight into the York line, bouncing and spinning out of contact from 10 metres out before carrying two York defenders over with her, Hill converting.

Leeds increased their growing list of scorers when Frankie Townend would scoot from dummy half, the sharp hooker then offloading for the supporting Ellie Oldroyd to dive over and score, Hill kicking the goal to take Leeds out to a 0-44 lead.

York would hit their purple patch after some big defensive efforts, their attack then springing into action and making inroads into Leeds territory, York’s persistence rewarded when a high kick was spilled on the Leeds line Emily Farrow reacting fastest to register York’s first and only points on the day, Ellie Hendry converting for the Knights.

The Rhinos final points would come from in form centre, Sophie Robinson, Robinson would complete her hat trick when Hanna Butcher unleashed her close to the York line, Robinson cutting in and wriggling over, Courtney Hill notching the Rhinos lead to 6-50.

The final whistle was met by the cheers of many as the Leeds Rhinos Women were crowned League Leaders for the 2018 Super League season, focus quickly shifting to next weekend when they take on Castleford at Weetwood Sports Ground in the play offs semi final.
