Leeds Rhinos women put the disappointment of their Challenge cup final defeat behind them with a commanding 60-4 victory over a spirited Huddersfield Giants side. The Rhinos ran in 12 tries on the night with the pick of the try scorers being Fran Goldthorp who scored a second half hat trick from fullback.

Leeds got off to a flying start by scoring 10 points in as many minutes. Hooker Keara Bennett was the first to score as on the last tackle she dummied to the left from the base of the ruck before diving over the line from a metre out. From the following set after kick off it was Zoe Hornby’s turn to score. The player of the match from the Challenge cup final made it two in two games as she made a break through the heart of the Giants defence on the half way line. The loose forward was then too fast and strong for the Huddersfield fullback, brushing past her to score under the posts.

Huddersfield did hit back on the 16 minute mark through Amelia Brown. The winger used her pace to get on the outside of Sam Hulme and streak away down the right wing. Fran Goldthorp tried her best to get to the flying winger, but she just couldn’t get to her before Brown dived over in the corner.

This would be as good as it got for Huddersfield as three more Leeds tries before the end of the half saw the Rhinos take a commanding 22-4 lead into the break. The first of these tries came in the 21st minute as Leeds were given a penalty which meant that they started their attack well inside Huddersfield’s half. Courtney Winfield-Hill spotting an overlap on the left threw a simple pass to Beevers which saw the newly positioned centre get on the outside of the final defender to score 5 metres in from the corner. On her 50th club appearance Courtney Winfield-Hill turned from provider to scorer with what was the try of the match. The halfback on the last tackle chased her own chip over the defensive line and managed to regather and touch the ball down just before she stepped into touch.

Not satisfied with her first half work Winfield-Hill found time for another try assist 2 minutes before the break as she spun an inch perfect miss pass that bypassed her second row and centre before finding Sam Hulme unmarked on the right wing. All the winger had to do was catch the ball cleanly and dive over in the corner.

Fran Goldthorp had looked dangerous all first half and she scored the first of her three tries within a minute of the second half starting. Huddersfield spilled the kick off and in the resulting set Leeds spread the ball wide through Roche and then Goldthorp who was able to burst through a gap in the Giants right edge defence to score. She then got her second just 5 minutes later when the fullback once again broke through the Huddersfield line. This time it was directly from a scrum 40 metres out from the try line and she was simply too fast for the covering Giants fullback.

After an impressive first half display, Courtney Winfield-Hill picked up where she left off by getting a try and try assist in the space of three minutes. Firstly, another handling error from the Giants gifted Leeds territory and a set inside the Huddersfield 20 metre zone. Winfield-Hill called for the ball on the left and she was able to step round the onrushing defenders to break the line and dive over for her second. She then assisted Elychia Watson by again finding space on her edge and a short pass allowed the second rower to run on to the ball and drive over the line, despite a last ditch legs tackle by a scrambling Huddersfield defender.

After such a dominant display by her halfback partner it was Georgia Roche’s turn to get in on the action on the hour mark. Roche, as she so often does, took on the Huddersfield line and some lovely footwork saw her jink past the Huddersfield defender and dive over the line to score.

Just 3 minutes later Fran Goldthorp completed her 23 minute hat trick. Picking up the ball on the left she skirted across the front of the defensive line looking for a gap before darting between the Huddersfield centre and winger to break though and score just to the right of the posts.

Leeds reached 60 points with 10 minutes to go thanks to a try from Sam Hulme that was almost a carbon copy of her first. Courtney Winfield-Hill once again threw a bullet of a miss pass to the winger in space and once again all Hulme needed to do was dive over the line and score. Winfield-Hill after a shaky first half with the boot kicked her second touchline conversion of the game to add the two and get to 60 points. Hulme almost completed her hat trick minutes later but this time Hill’s pass was just behind the winger and went into touch.

After a strong start Leeds Rhinos will now travel to the LNER community stadium to face a York City Knights side they narrowly beat 28-26 in this year’s Challenge cup semi-final.
