Leeds Rhinos Women 40 Castleford Tigers Women 12

Following their first defeat of the season, Leeds Rhinos Women produced a brilliant performance to go level on points with table toppers St Helens by defeating the Castleford Tigers Women in their first match at Emerald Headingley.

The Rhinos’ women got off to a poor start in their first home game of the season, as two Rhinos failed to clean up Tara Stanley’s kick-off leading to a goal-line drop-out. From the resulting possession the Tigers struck. A long cross field kick from Olivia Grace was pounced on by Alex Wallace after the ball stood up in goal. Stanley added the conversion to give Castleford an early 6-0 advantage.

After that it was all Leeds, with the Tigers continually coughing up possession and giving away a number of penalties around the ruck and the Rhinos soon took advantage. After a forceful run from Dannielle Anderson, Lois Forsell dummied over from close range making it two tries in two weeks since her return from injury. Courtney Hill added a spectacular conversion from out wide to level the scores at 6-6.

Leeds then survived a number of chances from the Tigers, with Charlotte Booth clearing up Katie Hepworth’s chip over the top before taking the lead. Sophie Robinson broke free from a number of tackles and went on a darting run before being held 20 metres shy of Castleford’s try line. The Rhinos then spread it wide with Madison Laverick going in at the corner under pressure from Kelsey Gentles. Courtney Hill was unsuccessful with the conversion. 10-6 to Leeds.

As the Rhinos pressed and gained another set of six from Courtney Hill’s charged down kick, Leeds added to their advantage. Quick hands from Hanna Butcher and Larisa Deaves provided Sophie Robinson with a deserved try to give Leeds an 8-point advantage. Courtney Hill again produced a stunning conversion from the left flank making the score 16-6.

With only a few minutes remaining of the first half, Leeds crossed for their fourth try of the game. Booth’s strong run saw her go close before Leeds spread it wide to the left again leading to Robinson getting her second try of an exciting first half. Courtney Hill unfortunately struck the crossbar with her conversion attempt, but Leeds were still very much in control at the half way stage with a 20-6 advantage.

Leeds started the second period as they had finished the first. After surviving Castleford’s first attack of the half, a 20-metre re-start was rewarded to the Rhinos and Courtney Hill took a quick tap and burst away for a stunning long range try for the Australian import. She would then add the extras to give Leeds a 20-point lead.

Castleford went looking for a route back into the match and cut the deficit shortly after with a carbon copy of their first try. Wallace again grounding a cross field kick before Stanley added the conversion.

Unfortunately, the second half was paused for large periods after injuries for Castleford’s Tamzin Renouf and Leeds’ Danika Prim. But when the game re-started Leeds kicked on and built on great forward running from Amy Johnson and Shannon Lacey. Off the back of this, Forsell went down the blind side and fed Suze Hill in at the corner for the Rhinos’ sixth try having been denied earlier by the touch judge for a forward pass. Unfortunately, her namesake, Courtney, failed to add the extras. 30-12 to the Rhinos.

As Castleford seemed to be heading for their first defeat of the season, they began to chance their arm and often gave Leeds possession. The Rhinos scored off the back of this with the skipper Forsell darting over from dummy half for her second of the game. Hill converted the score before Leeds wrapped up a brilliant performance with a try on the hooter. Leeds spread the ball down their right flank and Booth forced her way in for a deserved try. Courtney Hill failed to added the two points but I didn’t take away from an outstanding individual performance from the scrum-half as she led her team to a 40-12 victory over the Tigers.
