Leeds Rhinos Women 30 Bradford Bulls Women 10

The Leeds Rhinos women completed the league double over local rivals and last year’s champions, Bradford Bulls, as they cruised to a 30-10 victory.

The two teams were coming into the game on the back of very contrasting results. The Rhinos women recently beat York City Knights 80-0 and Bradford were defeated at home to Wigan.

It didn’t take long for the league leaders to draw first blood. After just five minutes, Danielle Anderson was tackled just short of the try line and Lois Forsell then collected her own grubber kick to touch down underneath the posts. Courtney Hill added the extras and the Rhinos women were off to a flying start.

Leeds began to turn the screw and create scoring chance after chance but they couldn’t quite keep hold of the ball. The Rhinos’ failure to make Bradford pay for their defensive mistakes cost them dear as it was now Bradford’s time to test the Leeds defence.

It was wave after wave of attack from the Bulls women and with the error count rising from the Rhinos, it was inviting even more pressure. Bradford eventually scored through Amy Hardcastle, and Claire Garner converted the try to tie the game at 6-6.

More mistakes from the Rhinos women gave Bradford confidence. However, Danielle Anderson broke through the Bulls defensive line and ran 35 metres to score and put Leeds back in front. Then immediately from the restart, Lois Forsell scored her second try of the game. Her jinking run split open the Bulls’ defence and she stepped past three defenders to score in the corner.

The floodgates had seemed to have opened but Bradford somehow managed to hold on until halftime with Leeds leading 16-6.

A mistake from the kick off by Bradford gave Leeds the ball back and Caitlin Beevers the chance to turn on the jets. Her speed was too much for Bradford as she ran through to score in the corner; just a minute into the second half. Almost immediately, Frankie Townend then scored after she picked up the ball just a metre out and wriggled her way over the try line for the Rhinos women.

Bradford looked tired and deflated and Leeds continued to put them to the sword. Manina Spurr collected the ball from an offload and she touched down after a well worked passing move. Courtney Hill once again successfully converted the try and gave the Rhinos women a 30-6 advantage.

The game evened out and both teams were willing the throw the ball around but it was Bradford who scored in the final seconds through Jess Courtman. The conversion was missed and the match finished 30-10 to Leeds. The result means that for the entirety of June, the Leeds Rhinos women have only conceded two tries and they still remain at the top of the Women’s Super League table.
