A last gasp drop goal from Jack Sinfield earned Leeds Rhinos Under-18s a one point victory over Wigan Warriors at Headingley Stadium in a great Academy clash.

Wigan ran out into a 18-0 lead inside thirteen minute as they stunned a shellshocked Rhinos side. Billy Myers had tried to poke his nose through a gap in the Leeds defence but the Rhinos did well to close it. What they couldn’t stop though was prop Max Wood, who powered his way over on the next play to open the scoring.

The Warriors’ wingers then jumped into action as Reagan Sumner and Ethan Fitzgerald both added to Wigan’s lead. Fitzgerald finished well in the corner as Leeds were caught short on the edge, before a similar passing move was executed by Myers and Tom Ratchford to put Sumners over in the corner. Myers converted all three tries to make the score 18-0.

Leeds needed a spark and Kai Morgan provided it against the run of play. Wigan had earned a set restart after Higgins and Aldridge held down the Wigan forward but as Ratchford spun the ball out wide, Morgan was there to intercept and run 60 metres to score a spectacular effort.

The Rhinos continued to push for more points and with ten minutes to go, they got them. A knock on by Ri’Chards Nsemba prompted Leeds’ attack and after moving the ball downfield through their forwards, Sinfield and Edgell combined to open up space for Riley Lumb to score in the corner and cut the half time score to six points.

The second half was as dramatic as the first; neither side was prepared to back down.

For 16 minutes, both sides tussled as they set back into the tempo of the game, but Jacob Douglas’ breakaway try from a scrum was a shock to the system. Beating Neil Tchamambe and Will Gatus, the full back was released into the backfield and with only Edgell to beat, he rounded the full back to score a good individual effort.

Leeds responded with two tries inside the last twenty minutes. Dylan Proud first took a great pass from Edgell to power his way through two defenders and score in the corner before a similar play saw Neil Tchamambe touch down in the corner, thanks to more good work from Sinfield, Morgan and Edgell.

With ten minutes left, the deciding moments came courtesy of the boot of Sinfield. A penalty with nine minutes left received a pass back from Morgan and the half back didn’t need a second longer as he struck the ball sweetly to win the game for Leeds 23-22.
