Leeds Rhinos Netball returned to Hull’s Allam Sport Centre to complete their re-arranged fixture from round one against Loughborough Lightning.

Clarke took the first centre pass and got the game underway infant of a home crowd. A high ball was placed into Burger and she got her the first of the game 1-0. Hall was patient on the centre pass and came through to pick up a fumbled ball, it was quickly placed over into burger 2-1. Rhinos applied tight defensive pressure but Clark adds another onto the board for Loughborough 2-2. Rhinos mid-court were again patient, Griersonm and burger combined well 3-2. Quick hands were on display yet again from Grierson which allowed Burger to add another 4-3.  Oyesola got her hands on the ball but took out one of the advertising boards and the ball went out of court 4-4.

Loughborough turned over a couple of balls as well as converting their own centre passes 4-8  allowing them to take a four goal lead. Hall found Burger under the post 5-8. Smart play from Clarke saw Grierson hold off Lightnings defence to allow Burger to net another 6-9. Patient play from Rhinos allowed them to build on the passage of play. Grierson popped one over to Burger 7-10. Rhinos fed a long ball into Burger who was home alone under the post 9-12. Rhinos were patient on the centre pass with another long ball into Burger who held off tight opposition 11-14. Clarke and Burger combined well and the gap remained at three 12-15. Loughborough held a three goal lead with just under three minutes remaining 14-17. Williams turned over ball for Loughborough, Rhinos then forced them off the backline but Joseph picked it back up on the circle edge. A missed shot allowed Rhinos to transition 15-18. Too much was put on the ball in mid-court for Rhinos allowing Loughborough to pick their own rebound up 15-20. Loughborough took the last goal of the quarter and time denies Clarke of the next centre pass 15-21.

Walker took to court in the WD position for the start of the second quarter. Burger took the first goal of the quarter 16-21. Rhinos remained patient on the ball and took it successfully to goal 17-22. Burger continued successful in the circle but Lightning were unstoppable under the post 18-24. Burger held well and took another long ball 19-25. Walker held off her player and forced her off the backline. Rhinos transitioned well and Burger popped it in 21-25. An attacking contact was called against Loughborough within their circle.

Grierson found Burger 23-27. Rhinos took an attacking backline and Grierson popped another over to Burger 24-27. Footwork was called against Clarke for Rhinos, she applied defensive pressure to earn it back but shortly after a held ball was called. Loughborough took it to goal 24-29. Another held ball was called against Rhinos in attack which allowed Loughborough to extend their lead 24-32. Cobden picked up another ball for Loughborough and Clark sank another impressive shot 24-33. Rhinos converted their own centre pass and Walker then picked up a loose ball. Burger converted 26-34. Hall did well to keep hold of the ball, she then found Burger 27-34.

Grierson picked the ball up on the transverse line and Rhinos added another 28-34. The ball went off their backline on the next centre pass. A missed shot from Lightning allowed Airey to pick it up. The ball switched possession between the two sides quickly, Loughborough missed a shot and Oyesola picked up the rebound. Quick hands from Hall allowed Rhinos to add another 29-34. Burger left the circle which allowed Grierson the space 30-35. Patience was displayed from Clarke on the centre pass who quickly then took the ball on circle edge 31-36. Grierson popped another one over into Burger, 32-37. Loughborough converted their centre pass and time denied a final goal of the half 32-38.

Rhinos entered the second half just six goals behind current title holders Loughborough Lightning. Loughborough replayed ball early, Clarke did well to keep possession for her side. Hall went long into Burger and Rhinos had the attacking backline, Hall found Burger 33-38. Rhinos were patient on the ball and used the defence on the line to reset in attack 34-38. Walker assisted the transition and Hall quickly fed Burger under the post 35-39. Grierson placed a high ball into Burger 36-40. Hall and Clarke combined well but Burger picked her own rebound up without it touching the ring, subsequently a replayed ball was called and Loughborough took advantage 36-43.

An attacking contact call was given within the circle against Rhinos attack, Clarke continued to add points onto the board 36-44 for the away side. Airey earned her side the ball, but it was Loughborough who eventually took it to goal 36-45. Clark was available under the post for Lightning and their lead was to eleven 36 – 47. Williams turned over ball from a Rhino centre pass and Lightning continued to pull away 36-48. Cobden tipped the ball into the hands of Liversidge, Clark popped it through the net 36-50. Oyesola earned herself and her team the ball within Loughborough’s shooting circle. Grierson converted it this time 37-50. Clarke popped the ball into the circle 38-50. Burger held Harvey off strong 39-51. Rhinos earned themselves a backline in Loughborough’s attacking end. Clarke put a small bounce pass into Grierson who sank another to the crowds delight 40-51. Cobden turned over another ball for Loughborough, they continued to convert successfully 40-53. Hall tipped the ball on the transverse line, Grierson backed her up and took possession of the ball. Clarke assisted the transition and Burger added one more 41-54.

For the final 15 Tracey Robinson made a group of changes. Clarke moved down the court into the Wing Defence position, Walker moved into C, Grierson took the WA bib and Rushton entered the game at GA. Rushton took her first goal of the game, increasing her confidence 42-54. Contact was called against Airey, Loughborough added another 43-57. Lightning missed a rare shot and Rhinos picked up the rebound, a high ball went into Burger 44-57. Grierson continued to combine well with Burger 45-57. Cobden picked up another ball for Loughborough but a whole team defence from Rhinos forced the ball off the backline.

Rushton cleared to allow Burger the space 46-58. Another ball was placed high over Harvey into Burger 47-59. A held ball call went against Rhinos, they applied pressure on the transition for Loughborough and Oyesola came out with the ball. Burger finished it 48-60. Williams found Thacker on the drive into the circle, 48-63. Airey forced a missed shot for Clark, and she picked up the rebound. A patient transition saw Grierson find Rusthon 50-64. Rushton remained composed and put another one on the board 49-63. Rhinos added one more to their tally 52-68. A missed shot from Loughborough saw Airey pick up the rebound keeping it on the court and into the hands of Oyesola, Burger finished it 54-68. Burger remained unfazed 55-69. Oyesola earned herself another ball, Rhinos transitioned quickly with under a minute to go 56-69. Grierson was just short on keeping the ball on court in Rhino hands. Thacker popped one through the net for Lightning with less than twenty seconds remaining 56 -70. Clark finished the game off with a long shot 56-71

Rhinos return to Hull again next Friday to face Surrey Storm again at 19:00. Rhinos are also preparing for their fixture against local rivals Manchester Thunder which will be hosted at Leeds First Direct Arena on Sunday 8th May. Tickets are available for both fixtures at tickets.therhinos.co.uk
