Ashley Gibson marked his comeback to the side after six months with a try in the 54-12 win over Castleford Tigers. Gibson was one of five Rhinos try scorers in the first half as the team secured at least second place in the year's engage Super League.
Castleford got off to the worst possible start when after three minutes they had Scott Moore sin binned and whilst their hooker was off the field the Rhinos scored two tries. Gibson, was the first of the Rhinos' scorers and soon after Danny McGuire set up Rob Burrow for the second. With Moore back on the field however Castleford were able to stop the Rhinos flow and put some pressure on their defence. On 20 minutes the Tigers were rewarded for their efforts when Richard Owen collected Luke Dorn's pass to dive in it at the corner. Kirk Dixon added the conversion to narrow the scoreline. Carl Ablett sent in winger Lee Smith, who then returned the favour after taking Sinfield's high kick, before second rower Ali Lauitiiti proved unstoppable on a 10-metre run to the line. Sinfield was only able to convert two of his sides kicks so the half time scores stood at 24-6.
Jordan Tansey got the first try of the second half after collecting a perfect grubber kick from Rob Burrow. Kevin Sinfield added the conversion to extend the lead to 30-6. The next try came from a superb offload from Carl Ablett who was supported by the on running Brent Webb was able to hook the ball and then turn for the try. Sinfield once again added the conversion to take the Rhinos 36-6 in front. Castleford then enjoyed a spell of pressure in the Rhinos half which led to the a try for the visitors, which came Ryan McGoldrick, who spotted a gap in the Rhinos defence to go over from close range. Dixon converted to bring the score to 36-12. The Rhinos then stepped up a gear and scored another three tries to go past the half century mark. Rob Burrow set up Danny McGuire for the next try under the posts and Sinfield added the simple conversion from in front of the posts to re-establish the lead at 42-12. Jordan Tansey benefited from good work from Keith Senior, to go in at the corner for his second try of the night and then the replacement completed his hat trick in the final minute of the game, running from deep in his own half to go unopposed under the posts. Ellis, who was possibly making his final appearance for the Rhinos at Headingley Carnegie, stepped up for the conversion and the Australian bound star slotted over the ball to bring the final score to 48-12.
