Leeds Rhinos 48 Catalans Dragons 8

Leeds Rhinos made it back to back wins in the Betfred Super League and overcame the sending off of Brad Singleton in the second half to secure a well earned win over Catalans Dragons at Emerald Headingley.

A deluge of rain twenty minutes before kick off set up a dramatic backdrop to this crucial game for the Rhinos at Emerald Headingley as they took on Catalans Dragons.

The storm clouds had been handing over the Dragons camp for the previous week after the shocking scenes at Stade Gilbert Brutus six days earlier. Leeds took the lead after eleven minutes when Ash Handley and Konrad Hurrell chased a high, wide kick and got their reward as the winger hacked on and won the race to touch the ball down. Rhyse Martin added the conversion and a penalty soon after to make it 8-0 to the home side who were dominating possession.

The Rhinos then crossed for a sensational try through Martin who broke through near half way, dummied to pass to Jack Walker before pinning his ears back and racing for the line to score. He converted his own try and Leeds had a much deserved 14-0 lead.

Martin soon added a second penalty before Catalans go a try back against the run of play when Mickael Goudemand supported a break in midfield and took the pass near the line to score. Gigot added the conversion to cut the Rhinos lead.

In the final minute of the first half Leeds had Konrad Hurrell sin binned when Greg Bird was tipped in the aftermath of a tackle. Gigot kicked the penalty to make it 16-8 at the break.

Leeds needed to weather the storm at the start of the second half until they were back to their full quota but no sooner had Hurrell returned then Leeds were permanently down to 12 men when Brad Singleton was sin binned for a high tackle on Sam Kasiano.

The home side dug deep and crucially scored the next try as Ash Handley took his tally to 19 for the season with an intuitive piece of play as he juggled a kick initially before gathering the ball in and touching down as the in goal line raced up towards him. Martin added the conversion.

Richie Myler then got on the scoresheet against his former club as he read the run of Dwyer well before winning the race to touch down the hooker’s low kick. Martin added the conversion and a penalty to stretch the lead to 30-8 and Leeds had the result in their control.

Rob Lui showed great strength to get over for the Rhinos next try before Myler supported a break by Walker to cross for his second try. Martin kicked his tenth goal of the game to complete the rout of the Dragons on a memorable night for the Rhinos.
