It was a tough evening at Headingley Stadium as Leeds Rhinos suffered a tight 10-4 defeat to Catalans Dragons; man of the match Blake Austin scoring the home side’s only try.

The problems started early for the Rhinos as they lost Alex Mellor for the match with a suspected neck injury. The second rower was stretchered from the field but it didn’t stop Leeds’ attack; Leeming teeing up Gannon who tried to send the ball wide for Liam Sutcliffe or Ash Handley but the pass was too long and went straight into touch.

Catalans came biting back as Benjamin Jullien broke free of Aidan Sezer’s tackle to streak into the backfield but instead of passing to Josh Drinkwater, the second rower kept hold of the ball and was eventually brought down by Jack Walker. After another Leeds set, Sam Tomkins released Tom Davies down the sideline, only for the winger to try and go the distance himself without noticing he had players in support. Walker was there to defend again but the Dragons continued the attack with Mitchell Pearce, who tried to a wide pass for Fouad Yaha, but the winger dropped the ball over the sidelines.

Leeds retaliated as captain Kruise Leeming kicked a 40/20 to turn the tables in the Rhinos’ favour. The pressure started to mount on the Dragons’ defence as Davies was forced to take the ball in his own in goal area on two occasions, thanks to good kicks from Sezer, but finally the seal broke as Sezer and Austin combined to put Leeds’ number six through the Dragons’ defence. Despite juggling the ball in the air, Austin did really well to recover and wriggle his way to the try line to open the scoring.

Minutes later, the visitors were back on level terms as Yaha got his third try of the season. Back to back penalties against Leeds didn’t help the home sides’ cause and after Briscoe was pulled up for a high shot on Tomkins, the full back threaded a clinical pass for his winger Yaha to bulldoze his way to the try line. Although there was shouts for a penalty try to be given, referee Jack Smith agreed that there was no dangerous tackle from a Rhinos player.

Leeds attempted to close the half with a try as Leeming picked out Walker with a grubber kick through the line but Tomkins was up to the challenge to prevent his opposite number from scoring. That was the final play of the half as the teams went into the changing room locked together at 4-4.

A lacklustre second half followed as the wind and snow continued to come down on the Headingley turf.

Leeds tried to start the half strongly as a high kick from Sezer wasn’t contested by Tomkins, and as Dean Whare tried to get the ball into touch, Morgan Gannon batted the ball back into play but the referee judged the second rower was in touch.

An error from Liam Tindall led Catalans to score their second try on 50 minutes. The winger couldn’t take in Pearce’s kick along the floor and Catalans reclaimed before, two plays later, Joe Chan was put through a gap by Sam Kasiano to score. Josh Drinkwater converted to make the score 10-4.

Tindall was almost at fault again as he was unable to clear a kick by Pearce in the in goal area –  Yaha subsequently touching down – but the video referee spotted that the Leeds winger had been held backl by Langi in the process of chasing the ball down.

The Rhinos commanded most the game’s remaining minutes but couldn’t break down the Dragons’ defence. After he was introduced to the field, Brad Dwyer played a flat pass for Bodene Thompson, but the prop couldn’t hold on. Shortly after, a knock on from Chan invited Leeds forwards again and as Leeds tried to get to the try line with Ash Handley, Sezer’s kick on the fifth tackle was subsequently taken by Yaha.

Sezer was also intercepted by Yaha when the Rhinos looked to be on a roll but the home side were shown a glimmer of hope as Pearce was shown a yellow card for a dangerous head high tackle on Tindall. A great move wide by Walker and Sezer saw Liam Sutcliffe drop the ball at an inopportune moment before a similar scenario saw Sezer try and open up the Dragons’ left edge but the half back’s pass for Gannon was too strong and he lost the ball forward.

To their credit, the Rhinos never gave in and kept trying to roll the ball forward but in the end time ran out, consigning them to a third consecutive defeat of the new season.
