Leeds Rhinos ran in six tries to move off the foot of the Betfred Super League to kick off their Easter weekend in the best possible fashion.
The game was played in glorious conditions with the Easter sunshine setting the stage for some attractive rugby from the start.
Leeds opened the scoring after six minutes with a clever break from Brad Dwyer on half way and he found Tui Lolohea, who started at full back, in support to scamper over between the posts.
Four minutes later the Rhinos doubled their lead with a smart kick on the last from Dwyer behind the post and James Donaldson was fastest to react and run through to win the race to touch the ball down. Liam Sutcliffe converted both tries to give the home side a 12-0 lead.
Huddersfield put their kick off out on the full to give the Rhinos another possession in Giants territory and Leeds then opted for a kick at goal from a subsequent penalty as the visitors desperately try to stop the Rhinos pressure. Sutcliffe kicked the penalty to make it 14-0 after as many minutes.
Leeds were in rampant mood now and Dwyer got a richly deserved try after he was quickest to react to a clever kick by Myler to score. Sutcliffe’s conversion made it 20-0.
The Rhinos were then reduced to 12 men when Tom Briscoe was shown a yellow card for a collision as he chased a high kick and collected his opposite number instead. Worse was to come for Leeds as Konrad Hurrell had to be helped from the field with a hamstring injury soon after.
However, Leeds regrouped well and increased their lead with two more tries before half time. The first came from Myler as he collected Dwyer’s kick and then Myler had a hand in the fifth try of the game. He intercepted on his own line after a huge team effort to keep Huddersfield out. He fed Newman, who was tackled 40m from the Giants line, and quick passing along the back line put Briscoe in at the corner. Sutcliffe’s conversion attempt hit the post and bounced away but the Rhinos were good value for their 30-0 lead at the break.
Huddersfield were always going to throw everything at Leeds after the break and they gave themselves a lifeline with tries from Akuila Uate and Adam O’Brien but Leeds managed to keep them at arms length with a penalty from Lolohea whilst Sutcliffe was off the field for a head injury assessment on the hour.
McIntosh crossed for a third try for the visitors with 16 minutes to go and the Giants went searching for another score to set up a tense finish. However a wide pass from them was spilled 30 metres out and Ash Handley produced a fine run up field to out pace England start Jermaine McGillvary to score. Sutcliffe added the conversion to make the final score 38-18 and take the Rhinos off the foot of the Betfred Super League table.
