Leeds Rhinos 31 Catalans Dragons 12

By Will Hopper

Leeds Rhinos moved off the bottom of the Super League table with a dominant 31-12 win against Catalans Dragons at Emerald Headingley.

Both sides battled for field position in the opening ten minutes but it was Leeds who were handed a glorious opportunity to score the opening points of the game. Catalans conceded a penalty at midfield for holding too long in the tackle and the resulting kick to touch saw theRhinos move to within 20 metres of the try line.

After some good set up play, a precise inside pass to Adam Cuthbertson sliced open the Dragons defence and he stretched over for the opening try of the game. Liam Sutcliffe then added the extras to give Leeds a 6-0 lead.

The lead was soon doubled when Tom Briscoe intercepted a very risky long pass from Catalans just 15 metres from their own line. The winger ran through unchallenged to touch down between the posts and Sutcliffe easily kicked the ball between the sticks to make it a 12-point advantage.

Catalans have struggled defensively in recent weeks and they must have feared the worst when Leeds scored their third try of the game inside the opening 20 minutes. The try was almost a carbon copy of the first with the Dragons conceding yet another penalty at midfield. It was then another inside pass to Cuthbertson that cut through the Catalans defence, but this time he offloaded the ball to Brad Singleton who gratefully collected the pass to score with his first touch of the game. Sutcliffe made it three from three and pushed the score to 18-0.

The Dragons eventually responded with a try of their own when Arthur Romano finished off a spectacular move from Catalans in the right corner. Sam Tomkins converted the tough kick from out wide to reduce the deficit back to 12 points before halftime.

The first try of the second half was scored and converted by full back Tomkins who set up a tense final 20 minutes of action with the score at 18-12 in favour of the home side.

Any nerves from Rhinos fans were put to bed by Konrad Hurrell who scored after a well worked passing move that started with Cuthbertson powering his way through the Dragons defensive line. Rhinos debutant Robert Lui was involved as his cut out ball found Hurrell on the overlap and he touched down in the corner. Sutcliffe continued his excellent form with the boot as his difficult kick from out wide sailed through the posts and stretched the Leeds advantage back to 12 points.

A dazzling drop goal from Richie Myler and then a terrific try from Jack Walker, followed by a conversion from Sutcliffe sealed a 31-12 win for Richard Agar’s side, who now move off the bottom of the Betfred Super League table into ninth position after the weekend’s round of fixtures had been completed.
