Leeds Rhinos 21 Castleford Tigers 20

Konrad Burrell

Leeds Rhinos secured a dramatic 21-20 win over Castleford Tigers at Emerald Headingley with a golden point extra time winning drop goal from hooker Brad Dwyer.

The Rhinos had not beaten their local rivals at home since the summer of 2013 but they looked on course for a comfortable victory when they led 20-4 midway through the second half. However, a late rally from the Tigers looked like it would secure the win for Daryl Powell’s side only for Calum Turner to miss his conversion attempt after Alex Foster had levelled the score.

A frantic final three minutes could not separate the sides, with both missing drop goal attempts, before Dwyer stepped up with an incredible 43 metre effort to seal the win.

Leeds had once again taken an early lead in this game when Konrad Hurrell crossed for his fifth try of the season.

The Rhinos were denied another try for Hurrell and one for Tom Briscoe by the video referee James Child after both were ruled out. Referee Ben Thaler referred up an obstruction in the first effort and then it was adjudged Kallum Watkins had knocked on when he jumped for a cross field kick.

Castleford hit back when Liam Watts proved too big to stop near the line however the Rhinos managed to edge themselves back in front when Super League’s leading try scorer, Ash Handley, touched down after good work by Hurrell. Sutcliffe’s conversion attempt from wide out hit the post again and rebounded away to leave the score at 8-4.

Sutcliffe did extend the lead before half time with a penalty and Leeds were good value for their 10-4 lead at the break.

The Rhinos came out fired up and increased their lead when skipper Kallum Watkins broke clear as he picked up a spilled ball by the visitors. He raced up field but had the presence of mind to take the tackle with the Tigers back peddling quickly. Liam Sutcliffe combined with Jack Walker before taking the return pass to go over and score. Cameron Smith missed the conversion attempt but did convert the next score.

Brad Dwyer managed to free his arms in the tackle and offloaded to Trent Merrin and the Australian powered over for his second try in as many games at Emerald Headingley. The Rhinos now led 20-4 and looked in control.

However, Castleford responded in typical style and got a score back when Greg Minikin went over wide out. Former Rhino Chris Clarkson marked his return to Emerald Headingley soon after taking a short pass from Paul McShane and then another former Rhino levelled the game as Alex Foster won the race to touch down a through kick. However, Turner missed the conversion and the scores were locked at 20-20.

The Tigers had possession in the final moments but good pressure from Leeds prevented them getting a clear shot at goal for the drop goal attempt and then McShane was tackled on the last tackle on the Rhinos try line with the final play of normal time.

Leeds received the kick off at the start of the golden point period and Dwyer made sure of a famous win with his long range effort.
