Leeds Rhinos 16 St Helens 14

Leeds Rhinos made it a special night at Headingley Carnegie with a try apiece for Ryan Hall and Adam Cuthbertson in the second half to secure victory over St Helens.

Leeds and St Helens have created some of the greatest games in the Super League era and it was fitting that Saints should be the Rhinos opponent for the final game of the South Stand.

The two previous meetings this season were decided by just two points with the home side taking the spoils on each occasion and so it proved again.

Saints targeted youngster Jack Walker and winger Tom Briscoe under the high ball throughout, with both coming up with assured performances to keep their side on the front foot. The visitors had the better of the first half but had to settle for a Mark Percival penalty when Leeds were penalised for holding down after ten minutes.

Despite Saints enjoying the better of the chances, Kallum Watkins equalised after 19 minutes with a penalty when the visitors were caught offside.

St Helens could have gone back in front when Percival had another chance for a kick at goal but he blazed it wide.

They did eventually go in front when Zeb Taia broke clear on half way following good work by James Roby, who was a constant thorn in the Rhinos side, he drew Walker and put Jonny Lomax over for the try. Percival’s conversion made it 8-2 at the break.

After the lacklustre performance at Wakefield the week before, Leeds needed to come up with a response in the second half to befit the occasion and they did just that.

Wilkin had been penalised for obstruction as Saints came away and Leeds punished the error. A fine piece of play from the back line saw the ball moved along the back line and Liam Sutcliffe timed his pass to perfection to put Hall in for the try to mark his 300th appearance.  Watkins curled in the conversion from the touchline to level the score after 49 minutes.

Both teams had chances after that but it was the Rhinos who turned the screw as they made the most of errors from Saints. Watkins missed a chance to edge his side in front when he put his penalty attempt wide however the Rhinos had their tails up and eventually turned pressure into points when Cuthbertson took the pass to go through the gap and score. Watkins added the conversion to put his side 14-8 in front with 15 minutes to go.

Watkins then added a subsequent penalty to put his side two scores in front but there was still time for late drama when Saints replacement Danny Richardson crossed with five minutes to go.

Saints chanced their arm looking for a winning score but it was not to be and the Rhinos had their scripted end to the South Stand.
