Leeds Rhinos 12 Salford Red Devils 20

Leeds Rhinos fell to a 20-12 defeat against Salford Red Devils in the penultimate Betfred Super League contest of the 2019 season.

It was a fairly even start to the game with both sides lacking the clinical edge to get over the try line and draw first blood. Konrad Hurrell came closest when he powered his way over the line but was prevented from putting the ball down by some last ditch defending from the visitors.

Salford’s defensive efforts were rewarded when their Super League Man of Steel contender Jackson Hastings broke through the Rhinos’ line and handed the ball off to Niall Evalds to score under the posts. Krisnan Inu casually converted the try to give the away side a 6-0 lead. They then doubled their advantage with a try through Jake Bibby on a short side passing move with Inu again adding the extras.

The Rhinos did manage to squeeze in a response before the halftime hooter with an excellent team try finished off by Richie Myler. After working the ball out to the left, Liam Sutcliffe charged at the Red Devils line and managed to offload to Jack Walker who then drew the fullback and passed back inside to Myler to stroll under the posts uncontested. Rhyse Martin easily converted from in front of the sticks to cut the deficit back to 6 points.

Unfortunately, from the restart the Rhinos gave away a penalty which Inu successfully converted to end the half at 14-6.

The early part of the second half was dominated by Leeds as they caused Salford to concede multiple penalties just metres from their own try line. The Rhinos huffed and puffed and eventually blew the house down when Jamie Jones-Buchanan scored on his return from injury. A short grubber kick was perfectly weighted for JJB to pounce on and send Emerald Headingley into hysteria. Rhyse Martin continued his excellent form with the boot as his conversion sailed through the uprights to cut the deficit to just 2 points.

The Rhinos just couldn’t quite get themselves in front on the scoreboard and after three incredible goal line stands by the men wearing blue and amber, the visitors eventually broke through to seal a 20-12 win through Joey Lussick.
