Huddersfield Giants 14 Leeds Rhinos 13

A last minute drop goal from Lee Gaskell broke Leeds’ hearts at the John Smith’s Stadium as the Rhinos were edged 14-13 by Huddersfield Giants.

Coming into the game, the Rhinos were without Kyle Eastmond, who was ruled out of the clash with a hamstring injury, but Liam Sutcliffe returned to the side to join Kruise Leeming in the halves, following Richie Myler’s two game suspension. Jack Broadbent came back into the full back position as Ash Handley moved onto the wing and Jarrod O’Connor and Sam Walters were reintroduced in the starting 13, seeing Rhyse Martin and James Donaldson drop down to the bench with Luke Briscoe. Alex Mellor also made his 100th Super League appearance against his former club, lining up with Ash Handley at centre.

The rain tumbled down at the John Smith’s Stadium, like when the two sides met in pre-season, but the opening exchanges were clean despite the conditions. With only ten minutes gone, the Giants looked to have taken the lead when Jack Broadbent misread a high bomb from Jack Cogger and Aidan Sezer kicked the loose ball ahead to touch down, but referee Liam Moore called the Huddersfield half back offside. With the penalty helping push Leeds downfield, the Rhinos were in a good position to build but Kruise Leeming lost the ball, turning possession over.

Another Giants penalty enabled Leeds to get their first points of the game minutes later. Huddersfield were caught offside and Leeds took full advantage, Leeming and Sam Walters combining to open up space on the left side of the field and Mellor nearly got the ball over the line but was held up. After Matt Prior also tried to wriggle his way through, Brad Dwyer darted out of dummy half and fed Bodene Thompson, who crashed over for his first try in Leeds colours.

Jarrod O’Connor prevented the Giants from adding their own first try of the game before the young loose forward nearly got a try for himself as he attempted to kick ahead on the fifth tackle but the Giants recovered and brought the ball away.

As the half reached the final ten minutes, Huddersfield levelled the scores through Sezer. A knock on from the Rhinos near their own line looked like it could be a fatal blow for Richard Agar’s side and the Giants made Leeds pay; Sezer taking on the line and evading the tackle from Donaldson to dive over the whitewash after being denied at the start of the half. He added the conversion to give the home side a 6-4 lead.

The Giants tried to end the half with another try as Sezer opened up the Rhinos’ edge defence to give Darnell McIntosh space to break downfield but as the winger kicked ahead, Ash Handley made sure he was the first man to the ball; batting it away for a drop out. On the last set of the half, Huddersfield once again came down the left side to try and sneak in at the corner, but Leeds’ defence stood strong again and forced the ball out of play, sending the teams into half time with only two points splitting them.

Huddersfield came out of the traps quickly at the start of the second half, scoring after 45 seconds as Lee Gaskell’s break through the Rhinos defence found Sezer for his second of the game. A succession of penalties against the Rhinos enabled the Giants to have another chance to add more points, Sezer electing to go for goal after Kenny Edwards was obstructed while chasing a grubber kick from Cogger. Sezer stepped up to convert, giving Huddersfield a 12-4 lead.

Leeds were lucky to survive another Giants attack as Adam O’Brien got himself round the markers to beat Broadbent to the line for a certain try but referee Moore saw Edwards, who had run the ball in on the previous play, obstructed Leeming from making the tackle on O’Brien and gave the penalty the way of the Rhinos. After Leeds had turned the ball back over on the fifth tackle, Huddersfield looked like they were over the try line once again as Luke Yates took an offload from Ricky Leutele to drive for the line but the referee called that the prop had knocked the ball on.

With possession, the Rhinos got themselves back in the game; Sutcliffe slicing through the Giants’ defence before offloading for Handley to break away from Jermaine McGillvary and score in the corner. Rhyse Martin took over the kicking duties and successfully converted to bring the score back to within two points before adding a penalty goal from 45 metres out to lock the scores up.

Both games against the Giants were decided by drop goals in 2020 and this year was no different as Liam Sutcliffe and Aidan Sezer tried to battle it out to give their sides the victory. Sutcliffe’s first two attempts were unlucky; the half back missed his first before losing the ball when he tried to set up for another attempt. Walters also tried to release Handley down the wing but the Giants brought the ball away and nearly added a try of their own through Josh Jones, but the touch judge called that Chris McQueen had touched the ball forward from Gaskell’s cross field kick.

Sezer put his first attempt under the bar before Sutcliffe managed to edge the Rhinos ahead but the former Canberra half back locked the score up again minutes later. Sutcliffe again had the best chance to win the game for Leeds but missed a golden one-point attempt following a strip from Matt Prior. In the final seconds, with the Rhinos expecting Sezer to go for the winner, instead he found Gaskell, who slotted the decisive drop goal from range and won the game 14-13 for Ian Watson’s side.
