Huddersfield Giants U19 20 Leeds Rhinos U19 28

Tries from Oli Field, Ben Mayhew, Caine Glancy, Max Simpson, and two from Corey Hall helped Leeds Rhinos Under-19s beat Huddersfield Giants Under-19s 28-20 at Huddersfield YMCA.

Walker’s side were back on the road for a second week running, after beating Wakefield Trinity 32-6 over a week before, but suffered an early setback as the Giants opened the scoring. A penalty against Leeds proved harmful as Huddersfield found themselves on the Rhinos’ try line inside the opening five minutes. After Benjamin Killan tried to wriggle his way over, a nice short side play saw Ethane Wainwright feed winger Codey Downey, who scored in the corner.

Leeds finally settled into their rhythm and got back level through Corey Hall. A knock on from second rower Spencer Peel invited Leeds to test the Giants’ defence and Jack Mallinson tried his luck but couldn’t get the ball down. On the next play, Bailey Aldridge spun the ball wide for Luca Atkinson, who connected up nicely with Ben Mayhew to stretch the Huddersfield defence and a final pass to Hall rounded off the move; the centre scoring in the corner despite Connor Carr’s best efforts.

The visitors had their sails up and took the lead just before the 20 minute mark. Ben Sheils found some space on the edge and broke free to get one on one with the full back but Wainwright was up to the challenge. Still Walker’s side kept coming and as Mallinson threaded the ball through the Huddersfield defence, captain Oli Field did really well to beat the defenders and score under the posts. Mallinson converted the latter to make the score 10-4.

For all their efforts, the Giants worked their way back into the match but couldn’t find the finishing touch as both Wainwright and Peel were both held up by some stubborn Leeds defence. A knock on by Leeds followed a brief stoppage for Alfie Edgell, who went down with a head injury, and Huddersfield were on the attack again. After a move wide broke down as Downey couldn’t take Wainwright’s pass cleanly, the ball moved back infield and a grubber kick for the ingoal bounced off the post pads. Josh Rhodes was the quickest to react and the forward dotted the ball down to level the score, Kieran Rush adding the extras.

As half time loomed, Leeds needed to force a mistake and a knock on by the home side was perfect for Walker’s men. Hall and AJ Wallace threatened to score before a pass from Oli Burton, intended for Hall, was batted down by Carr, forcing a repeat set for Leeds. The Rhinos persisted to ask questions of their opponents defence and got their rewards when Mayhew took a short pass from Burton to power his way over. Mallinson couldn’t add the extras as Leeds took a four point lead into the break.

The young Rhinos continued to dominate with the ball in hand at the start of the second half, but had to dig deep to ensure they came away with the win.

Early pressure on the Giants’ line gave way for Hall to score his second of the evening, the centre beating the challenge of Carr to step back inside and score, before the home side were reduced to twelve players after Huddersfield substitute George Roby impeded Sheils after the Leeds winger broke free and kicked ahead for himself to score. Now with the extra man, Leeds didn’t let their pressure slip and a nice pass from Mallinson allowed Caine Glancy to power over for his first academy try.

A minute later, the visitors’ lead grew again; top try scorer Simpson getting in on the action to add to his season’s tally. Mackenzie Turner and Jack Sinfield, who was making his academy debut, were both causing problems for the Giants’ defence and after Mallinson was brought down trying to shift the ball wide, Sinfield produced a great chip into the corner and Joseph Howe tipped it into the hands of Simpson, who touched it down.

With a significant gap on the scoresheet, Simpson nearly added a second try of the evening with a good break but the centre’s offload inside was to nobody and Huddersfield brought it away. It would mark nearly 20 minutes of pressure from the Giants as they attempted to get back in the match. Downey dropped a pass that would have seen the winger get his second before Huddersfield finally got on the board with ten minutes to go; Sean Slater feeding Howe to close the gap.

Roby’s return to the field saw the hooker set up Ben Killan to make the score 28-20, along with Kieran Rush’s conversion, but the young Rhinos saw the game out and ensured they kept their winning streak going.
