Huddersfield Giants 0 Leeds Rhinos 44

Leeds Rhinos came up with a comprehensive statement of intent as they produced a clinical performance including two tries each for Konrad Hurrell and Ash Handley to put them level on points with the Giants in the Betfred Super League table.

Huddersfield had the best early chance after an early kick from Kruise Leeming was chased in numbers and resulted in an error from Leeds. The home side then gained a repeat set when Harry Newman was trapped behind his own line but the cross field kick on the last tackle was well dealt with by Tom Briscoe.

It was the Rhinos who opened the scoring after 19 minutes through Adam Cuthbertson. The Australian set up the position for the try with a 30 metre break in midfield before offloading to Jack Walker in support. Leeds kept control of the ball and a deft kick from Harry Newman bounced up for Cuthbertson to stretch out and arm and collect to score. Rhyse Martin added the conversion to make it 6-0.

The Rhinos extended their lead with a nice piece of interplay between Martin and Rob Lui that put Tom Briscoe over in the corner. Martin was unable to add the conversion but Leeds now led 10-0.

That would prove to be Briscoe’s last involvement in the game as he had to helped from the field soon after having buckled to the floor with a knee injury after he tried to change direction to make a tackle.

The injury came after the visitors had extended their lead even further with a rampaging run by Konrad Hurrell through the Giants defence and over the top of full back Darnell McIntosh. In the build up to the game, the Giants number one had made disparaging comments about the Leeds club and he was left to feel the weight of that as the Tongan international ran threw him to score. Martin added the conversion to stretch the lead to 16-0.

Leeds had to produce some strong defence to keep Huddersfield out after that gained back to back sets on the Rhinos line. Richard Agar’s side stood firm though and kept the home side out and then crossed for a fourth try just before half time.

The Rhinos got a repeat set when Lui had the ball knocked from his hands and, with Huddersfield desperately back peddling, Brad Dwyer ran hard and direct at the defence from dummy half and raced through the gap to score. Martin kicked the conversion to make the half time lead 22-0 to the Rhinos.

With a commanding lead at the break, Leeds needed to keep control of the game and they did that in the second half with a clinical display. The Rhinos were solid in defence and Huddersfield were forced to chance their arm. When the ball was spilled just inside the Leeds half, Richie Myler was fastest to react, he picked up and ran clear before passing to Ash Handley for the winger to run in and score on his 100thappearance for the club. Martin added the conversion to make it 28-0 after 47 minutes.

Leeds then increased their lead on the hour mark when Konrad Hurrell crossed for his second try with a powerful drive from close range as he held off three would be tacklers to score. Martin added the conversion to make it 34-0.

The Rhinos wrapped up the win with six minutes to go when Lui put Martin away and the second rower raced up field. He found Newman in support and although the youngster was caught Leeds were in try scoring mood. Myler and Ferres combined to put Liam Sutcliffe in space to score in the corner.

In the final minute of the game there was still time for the Rhinos to increase the all important points difference as Myler put Handley away to score in the corner and make the final score 44-0.
