Halifax RLFC 6 Leeds Rhinos 34

Two tries from Brad Dwyer in the second half set Leeds Rhinos on their way to a 34-6 win over Halifax after a nervy first half that had seen the side’s locked at 6-6 at the interval.

The Rhinos arrived at the MBI Shay for the first meeting between the sides since 2003 hoping to restore pride for the Super League clubs after the three Championships sides in the Qualifiers had secured wins over Super League opposition at home already in the penultimate round of games in the Super 8s.

Leeds were looking to go top of the table with victory and they got off to a solid start when Richie Myler timed his run to collect Joel Moon’s reverse kick in the corner to score. Liam Sutcliffe add the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead after seven minutes.

Jack Walker was looking dangerous every time he attacked the Halifax line but the home side deserved credit for their well drilled defence that stood firm on their own line and forced the Rhinos to try and create the opening.

Halifax, on the back of their good defence, grew in confidence as the match went on. Despite being behind on the penalty count early on, they worked through their sets and made the Rhinos come from near their own line on each occasion.

The home side had a great chance when Ste Tyrer intercepted an offload by Adam Cuthbertson and the centre looked set to race clear and score only for Jamie Jones-Buchanan to instantly change his direction and make the tackle. However, Tyrer was not to be denied and he scored a spectacular try diving through the air to collect a cross field kick and touch the ball down as he fell. He converted his own try to level the match with ten minutes to go until the break.

That was the way it remained until the interval but Leeds then came out fired up at the start of the second half with Brad Dwyer leading the charge for the visitors. He got the team moving down field and Leeds then made the most of their next opportunity. James Woodburn-Hall jumped highest to collect a high kick but then lost the ball as he came to the ground, the Rhinos were quick to react and two tackles later Dwyer spotted a gap from dummy half to go through and stretch out to score. Sutcliffe added the conversion to give his side a 12-6 lead after 44 minutes.

Walker then had to produce a vital tackle on Sion Jones on his own line when the Halifax replacement came charging onto a ball from close range.

Having weathered that storm the Rhinos then increased their lead when Dwyer was once again the key man as he spun out of the intial tackle before rolling back towards the posts and diving over. Sutcliffe added the conversion to put his side two scores in front.

Sutcliffe then crossed for his side’s forth try of the game when he spotted some tired defence from the home side then raced through the gap before sprinting in from 20 metres out to score between the posts. He converted his own try to make it 24-6.

Halifax continued to ask questions of the Rhinos defence, in particular a break by Shane Grady that was stopped inches short but it was Leeds who made sure of the result when Cameron Smith went over from close in. Sutcliffe adding the conversion again.

Smith then turned provider with the next score as he broke through in midfield before producing a fine floated pass wide to Luke Briscoe to go over in the corner. Sutcliffe missed his first kick of the game but the Rhinos had completed a clinical second half performance to win 34-6.
