Catalans Dragons 26 Leeds Rhinos 22

Four tries from Fouad Yaha overshadowed a hat trick from Ash Handley as the Rhinos lost out 26-22 in Perpignan.

The Rhinos got off to a fantastic start when a cut out pass from Richie Myler, against his former club, put Konrad Hurrell in space and he tipped his pass on to Ash Handley to touch down in the corner. Liam Sutcliffe added an excellent touchline conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead after six minutes.

Catalans came back strongly after that and forced three repeat sets on the Leeds line. However, the Rhinos stood firm and then Handley popped up to intercept a wide pass and raced 90 metres to score between the posts. Sutcliffe added the conversion to make it 12-0 after 15 minutes.

The Dragons went back on the attack and crossed for their first try when Yaha barged his way over from dummy half. Sam Tomkins added the conversion to cut the gap to 12-6.

However, importantly Leeds responded to that set back to cross for a third try. Great defence forced an error from the home side and Walker then created the space as he ran into the line to put Konrad Hurrell over for the try. Sutcliffe was unable to add the conversion from wide out but Leeds were good value for their 16-6 lead.

Catalans introduced their new star signing Kasiano after that score and the giant forward made an immediate impact. Back to back penalties gave the home side good field positon and eventually Yaha went over for his second try. Tomkins missed the conversion attempt.

Leeds were reduced to 12 men soon after when Brett Ferres was sin binned and in the next set Lucas Albert was awarded a try by the video referee. Tomkins added the conversion to level the game at 16-16 and that was how it stayed until half time.

Just after Ferres returned the Rhinos hit the front again with Hurrell earning his side a penalty with a rampaging run. Eventually Leeds made the most of the position as Handley was put over for his hat trick by a great cut out pass by Myler. Sutcliffe narrowly missed the conversion attempt but the Rhinos now led 20-16.

Once again the Dragons hit back as Yaha matched Handley’s feet with a third try which Tomkins converted to put his side in front for the first time.

Leeds managed to level the game with a penalty from Sutcliffe but fell behind with seven minutes to go when Yaha collected his fourth try. Tomkins missed his conversion attempt to leave the Rhinos with a late chance to hit back.

The Rhinos thought they had scored when Parcell picked up a loose ball and ran over the line only for referee Hicks to pull play back for the initial knock on and the visitors could to make the most of a couple of late chances to level the game.
