Bradford Bulls Women 10 Leeds Rhinos Women 42

Leeds Rhinos Women continued their winning start to the Betfred Women’s Super League with a 42-10 win over local rivals Bradford Bulls.

Caitlin Beevers and Ellena Powell both scored two tries and Fran Goldthorp, Sophie Robinson, Zoe Hornby and Courtney Winfield-Hill added a try apiece. The Rhinos captain also kicked five goals, taking her points tally for the Rhinos to over 400.

The Bulls thought they’d lost Danielle Bose in their opening set as the centre was injured being dragged over the sideline by Chloe Kerrigan and Sophie Robinson. As Bose was helped from the field, Leeds captain Courtney Winfield-Hill gave the visitors the lead. Kerrigan was almost posted through a gap in the Bradford line by Winfield-Hill but the centre was held up. Moving across to the right side of the field, Winfield-Hill attacked the line with intent and shrugged off the challenge of Samantha Herrick to get the ball down for her third try of the season. She hit the post with her own conversion to leave the score at 4-0.

Bradford had an excellent chance to respond but failed to make the most of their opportunity. The Bulls started their attack on Leeds’ line after Caitlin Beevers had dropped a high bomb from Stacey Greenwood. With a full set of six, Leeds did well to keep Bradford out until the Bulls were given a repeat set; the Rhinos getting caught offside from Greenwood’s fifth tackle kick. A knock on from Millie Taylor though turned the back back over to Leeds.

The Bulls did well to keep the pressure on Leeds and reaped their rewards; the returning Bose levelling the scores. A knock on from Kerrigan 30 metres from her own line invited Bradford to test the Rhinos’ defence out again and having seen both Beevers and Sophie Robinson drop high balls, Greenwood put a kick up into the corner and Robinson fumbled into the path of the onrushing Bose, who touched down. Sarah Dunn’s conversion fell short keeping the scores locked at 4-4.

The Bulls kept on pressurising Leeds but an error from Greenwood saw the Rhinos get the ball over the try line again. After Kacy Haley was taken from the field with a suspected head injury, half back Greenwood was wrapped up well by Kerrigan on the last tackle to give Leeds possession. On her return to the team, Keara Bennett almost crowned her introduction from the bench with a try but was held up in the in-goal area. Thinking fast, Beevers and Goldthorp combined well and Goldthorp managed to round three Bradford defenders and score under the posts, sealing her 100th point for the Rhinos. Winfield-Hill stepped up to convert and with that two points, reached 400 points for the club.

Bradford tried to respond once again as Dunn was put through a gap in the Rhinos defence but the centre couldn’t get round Beevers, who dragged her down. Hooker Grace Ramsden tried kicking across field but instead Tara Moxon collected the ball behind the posts and brought it away.

Leeds would get one last try before the break, extending their lead to 10 points. Again Bradford were forced into touch, Hannah Donald this time going over the sidelines thanks to a good hit from Moxon, and after three plays, Winfield-Hill saw Ellena Powell in plenty of space and the half back spun a nice ball wide for the winger to catch and sprint the final 10 metres to score. Winfield-Hill missed the conversion, making the half time score 14-4.

In a scrappy start to the second half, the Rhinos did well to make sure they were the first on the scoreboard again. Bradford looked to get a good kick away through Greenwood but Beevers was there to gather and then break through the scattered Bulls defence. Cutting back infield, Beevers made sure she got the ball down under the posts for her first try of the game, making the score 20-4 with Winfield-Hill’s conversion.

Minutes later, Beevers was over for her second. Bradford looked set to reply after their restart went over the sidelines, gifting Mark Seal’s side possession close to the try line, but Ramsden tried to go out of dummy half on the fifth tackle and was held up well by Elle Frain in company. Leeds then went the full length of the field over the next 90 seconds. Moxon and Goldthorp brought the ball away from the Rhinos’ line strongly before Beevers cut through the Bulls’ heart and scored from 50 metres out untouched. Winfield-Hill stepped up to add another conversion to make the lead 22 points.

Leeds kept coming in waves of attacks before Robinson was over for her fourth try of the season. Off the back of another Bradford error, Leeds swept the ball left and Winfield-Hill held and released the ball perfectly to send Robinson in to score and take the Rhinos beyond 30 points.

Codie Slack got a consolation try back for the Bulls as Leeds rounded off the result with two further tries. After being denied previously for a knock on in the build up, Powell finally got over for her second try from another nice ball over the top by Winfield-Hill before Zoe Hornby got her third try in three league matches, breaking away from a tired Bradford defence to touch down under the posts in the final minute. Winfield-Hill converted the latter, sealing a 42-10 result.
