Bradford Bulls 24 Leeds Rhinos 22

Leeds Rhinos were humbled at Championship side Bradford Bulls as they were knocked out of the Coral Challenge Cup at Odsal, losing out 24-22.

Leeds Rhinos made the perfect start to the game when they crossed for the game’s opening try as Brad Dwyer broke through before putting Tui Lolohea over for the try between the posts. Liam Sutcliffe kicked the conversion to make it 6-0 after as many minutes.

The Bulls hit back immediately however when Tom Briscoe lost control of the ball from the kick off as he skidded off his boots and the Bulls collected. The home side moved the ball quickly along the back line and winger Dalton Grant went over in the corner.

After that score the heavens opened after the earlier sunshine in the day. Leeds managed to cross for a second try when Callum McLelland marked his first start for the club with a spectacular effort as he managed to evade two would be tacklers to score. Sutcliffe added the conversion to make it 12-4.

Webster hit back for the Bulls when he plucked a cross field kick out of the air and then raced for the line and the Bulls were level when former Rhino Sam Hallas was on hand to collect an offload five metres from the visitors try line to go over. A change of kicker for the Bulls after that try saw Rowan Milnes kick the conversion to give the Bulls the lead for the first time in the game at 14-12.

However, things got better for Bradford when they crossed for a fourth try when Leeds were penalised for obstruction as Briscoe raced back after a high kick. The home side opted to take the tap penalty and got their reward when Wood barged over from close range. Milnes stretched the advantage with the conversion and a subsequent penalty to give his side a 22-12 lead.

Sutcliffe cut the gap on the half time hooter with a long range penalty but the Bulls were good value for their 22-14 lead at the break. The second half was a cagey affair as the Championship side showed incredible fortitude to withstand everything the Rhinos threw at them. The Rhinos were given hope when Harry Newman showed great strength to keep the ball alive before stretching out to score. Sutcliffe added the conversion to give his side a chance at 22-18.

Milnes kicked another score to put his team a converted try in front and the Bulls were grateful of those points when Tom Briscoe produced a wonderful effort to get the ball down with three defenders around him. Sutcliffe’s touchline conversion attempt hit the post and rebounded away to set up a tense finish at 24-22.

However, Leeds could not come up with a winning score and the Bulls held on for a well earned victory.
