An impressive second half fightback saw a young Leeds Rhinos side beat Bradford Bulls 30-12. A double from Max Simpson plus further tries from Alex Mellor, Kai Morgan and Liam Tindall ensured the visitors overturned a 12-0 half time deficit.

Jack Walker and Liam Sutcliffe made their return to action for the first time following injury layoffs as head coach Richard Agar named a young squad for the derby match. Levi Edwards and Corey Johnson both made their first appearances of pre season as Johnson, Muizz Mustapha and Jarrod O’Connor looked to impress Bradford coach John Kear before the trio joins the Bulls on loan. Jack Sinfield started in the halves with Sutcliffe, who captained the side, while reserves and Under-18s players Joe Hird, Kai Morgan, Alfie Edgell and Joe Gibbons came from the bench.

Bradford opened the scoring six minutes into the match with Kieran Gill. After starting the match slowly and being pressured by the Rhinos, the home side broke the deadlock as Dec Patton opened up Leeds’ left edge and passed for Gill to beat Jack Broadbent and score.

After Alex Mellor had come off for a HIA, Leeds continued to mount pressure on the Bulls with grubber kicks into the in goal area. The best chance for points came as Liam Sutcliffe stabbed a kick in for Walker to touchdown, but Dawson-Jones was up to the task and ran the ball dead. Rhyse Martin was also proving dangerous as he wriggled out of tackles but still Leeds remained scoreless.

Against the run of play, a penalty for a head high tackle led to Bradford scoring their second try of the game. As they marched downfield, both AJ Wallace and George Flanagan came close to the try line, only to be denied by good Leeds defence, before Billy Jowitt’s kick ahead was collected by former Rhino Rhys Evans, who had a simple score. Patton converted to make the score 12-0.

As half time loomed, both sides were involved in a scuffle, igniting both set of fans in the stands. A heavy tackle on Jack Sinfield saw the Leeds players react and there was a coming together. After the officials intervened, both Dawson-Jones and Muizz Mustapha were shown yellow cards as the referee signalled half time.

The second half saw Leeds’ fortunes turn as they scored five unanswered tries.

An electric start saw Jarrod O’Connor break away downfield for what looked to be a certain try. Bradford’s cover defence came across to stop the loose forward but he still managed to get the ball away for Alex Mellor, who scored Leeds’ first points of the game.

In a matter of minutes, the score was level. Young centre Max Simpson had been quiet in the first half but as he took an offload back inside from Walker, Simpson wowed the crowd with a great show of pace to score under the posts. Rhyse Martin converted both tries to make the score 12-12.

Agar began to reel the changes, bringing on the likes of Oli Field and Mackenzie Turner from the bench, but Leeds’ attack continued to flow. This time it was Liam Tindall who benefitted as Sinfield produced a first class pass to put the winger over in the corner.

Now with a six point lead, Bradford began to feel the pressure and started to throw the ball around to create opportunities. Knock ons and errors though energised the Rhinos, who didn’t look back before full time. Under-18s academy player Kai Morgan continued the scoring for Leeds as he spotted a gap in the Bulls defence to drive through and score a great individual solo effort, before a second try from Simpson rounded off a brilliant afternoon and fightback for the Rhinos; the final score 30-12.
