A big presence in all senses in the Colts and ‘A’ team, the genial prop made his debut as a teenage substitute in a comfortable win at Rochdale in March 1974.

Within a year, aged 18, he had picked up a winner’s medal and was superb in the Premiership final when St Helens – who’s opposing front row included Welsh titans Johnny Warlow and John Mantle, who were both substituted – were beaten 26-11 at Central Park. He claimed the first of three Yorkshire Cup triumphs in five years in November 1975 as player/coach Syd Hynes gradually increased his game time.

During the same period he gained five GB U24 caps – at the time the most for a forward - four against France, all of which were victorious, his only defeat coming against the touring Kangaroos at Craven Park, Hull in ’78. On the bench for both the 1977 and ’78 Wembley finals, he came on for Stan Fearnley and Mick Harrison respectively and had a profound impact on both occasions. He made his debut for Yorkshire off the bench in a win over Lancashire at Castleford in 1979, appearing three more times as a starter for the White Rose in 1981 and ’82.

Was part of the side that narrowly went down to Wigan in 1983 at Elland Road in the John Player final  and produced some of his best form in his benefit season in 1985, when he also won two full Great Britain caps against the French, the first a record breaking 50-4 win at Headingley.

Out of favour under Peter Fox, he played only ten times in 1985-6, four of those off the bench, leaving for Halifax. In all, he made 291 appearances for Leeds, 56 of them as a substitute, scoring 20 tries, his most prolific season being 1975-6 when he claimed four, including two in consecutive games.
