A schoolboy international, scrum half Kevin Dick followed in father Alec’s footsteps, joining at the same time as Jeff Stevenson.

Kevin signed from Milford in 1974, excelling in the ‘A’ team, and making his debut off the bench in a 25-12 win over Warrington at Wilderspool in October 1975, kicking a goal. A week later he scored his first try – again as a substitute - in a narrow victory over Oldham. His full debut, against Dewsbury in February 1976, also saw him cross the whitewash and he featured for the Great Britain Colts in their home and away series with France. He was thrust into greater prominence as a 19-year-old in tragic circumstances, making his Challenge Cup debut at Wembley the following year in only his 18th appearance, after the passing of Chris Sanderson during the final league match of the season at Salford a fortnight before.

Despite facing veteran Reg Bowden, he outplayed his opposite number and gave the ‘cup kings’ pack the run-around, scoring a brilliant solo try with a dummy between the posts, kicking three goals and a drop goal. The following season, and by then christened ‘the iron teddy bear,’ he became the first player in history to play his first two Challenge Cup ties at Wembley and victorious in both, coming off the bench as St Helens were dramatically vanquished.

Perhaps his finest performance was against Bradford in the 1979 Premiership decider, his seven goals and a drop and supreme game management securing a 24-2 win over their biggest rivals to win him the Harry Sunderland Trophy. In an astonishing underdogs performance a year later, his drop goal beat Hull KR in the Yorkshire Cup final, also at Fartown, as Leeds held on to win 8-7, earning him the White Rose award.

On the back of it he made two appearances for Great Britain in the series with New Zealand but was surprisingly overlooked when the ’82 Kangaroos toured and was unlucky not to gain further caps. His only other representative honours came with three run outs for Yorkshire. He was part of the Leeds team that lost in the 1983 John Player decider at Elland Road against Wigan – his only defeat in seven finals - his last winner’s medal coming in another standout display on the big stage, scoring a try in the 1984 JPS triumph over Widnes at Central Park. With a benefit season looming, he surprisingly switched his allegiance to Hull in 1986 in exchange for Trevor Skerrett and Andy Gascoigne, scoring two tries in what was to be his final appearance in a Yorkshire Cup tie with Keighley.

In 258 games for Leeds, he scored 85 tries, 380 goals and 17 drop goals for a total of 1,054 points, twelfth best in the all-time Leeds list. He took the black and white’s to within an ace of Wembley in 1988 losing after a semi final replay to Halifax whom he subsequently joined, before finishing his career at Huddersfield.

In 2023, Kevin was inducted into the Leeds Rugby Hall of Fame.
