Born in Huddersfield, Darren Fleary made his name twenty miles north in Leeds. Joining the club in 1997 for Keighley, Fleary proved to be a fan favourite in a dominant forward pack that included Anthony Farrell, Adrian Morley, Barrie McDermott and Martin Masella. He started the first Super League Grand Final in 1998 under Graham Murray, making 25 starts throughout the season before the club gained silverware in 1999. Fleary started 23 times that season and was selected in the final squad that defeated London Broncos in the Challenge Cup and winning the competition for the first time since 1978.

The turn of the millennium saw Fleary continue in the first team and would make his England debut in the 2000 World Cup, notably coming off the bench in the semi-final loss to New Zealand. He left Leeds in 2002, after only nine appearances, to return home and sign for Huddersfield, where he later became captain. A year and 55 appearances followed before Fleary would move again; this time to Leigh where he would end his career in 2005. He would re-join Huddersfield once more in 2009 as head coach of the Academy.
