Leeds Rhinos equalled their highest ever score in a match as twelve different try scorers added to a 90-0 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers in Round 2 of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup.
Individual records were broken too, as a hat-trick and 13 goals (38 points) from Ruby Enright sees her break Courtney Winfield-Hill’s record of 36 against York in 2018.
The result confirms the Rhinos place in the quarter finals of the cup, which will take place on the 13th/14th April.
The Rhinos started the game as they meant to go on as tries from Grace Field and Bethan Dainton in the first ten minutes set the pace. Field crashed over from close range whilst Dainton broke the line 20 metres out to score under the sticks. Enright was on target with both conversions.
Scores from Shona Hoyle and Lucy Murray came next as they were too strong for the Rovers defence. Substitute Zoe Hornby, with her first carry of the game, broke the line on halfway and ran the distance to score one of many spectacular tries of the game. Enright kept up her 100% record from the boot as the Rhinos led 30-0 after 25 minutes.
The final tries of the half came from Hoyle again, Caitlin Casey and Enright. The second rower’s second came much like her first after a great pass from Casey saw her in for an easy finish. Hoyle returned the favour just minutes later to put in her half back, before Enright used some excellent agility to step the defence, creating a gap for her to jink through. The full back was successful in converting all but her own try in the first half, helping the Rhinos to a 46-0 lead at the break.
The second half again was complete domination, despite the resilience of the Rovers players. Jasmin Cudjoe and Elychia Watson were first to score in the second forty, with Cudjoe benefitting from a quick play the ball to run through an unset defence to score. Watson however made a great break from her own 40m line, and ran the distance to go in under the posts. Enright was back on target with both conversions as the Rhinos led 58-0 after 50 minutes.
Next came another try of the season contender, as Enright channelled her inner Ash Handley, collecting a kick on her own line, before running to the left edge to find a gap and run the length of the field before finishing under the posts. Casey added her second quickly after and with the try and both conversions, Enright had 30 points in 60 minutes.
Bella Sykes and Izzy Northrop were next to get in on the try-scoring action. Sykes finished off a well-structured play to the right which drew in multiple defenders. She had work to do however as she rounded the full back to score out wide. Enright’s conversion sailed left. Northrop capitalised on another assist from Casey as she received a line ball 30m out and there was no stopping the young forward from there.
The final tries came from Tara Moxon, who benefitted from a strong and free-flowing set that resulted in Moxon capitalising on a broken defensive line. Enright, now on the wing, got her hat-trick on the final whistle as the ball was shifted right and she was in for an easy finish to give the Rhinos a 90-0 victory and a place in the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup.
