A hat trick of tries from centre Jimmy Keinhorst made sure that the Rhinos made it two wins from two at the start of the new Betfred Super League season.

The rain soaked Elland Road welcomed Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR for this round two clash with Rhinos legend Danny McGuire making his first return to the city.

The weather was a major factor in the opening quarter as neither team was able to keep hold of the ball in the wet and greasy conditions. Whilst the focus was obviously on McGuire, it was another former Rhino who nearly opened the scoring when loose forward Chris Clarkson charged through only to be denied by full back Jack Walker with a vital tackle.

Leeds then looked like they might score when Liam Sutcliffe, who had reverted to the half backs in the absence of the injured Joel Moon, burst through a gap. However, he lost control of the ball as he hit the ground and Hull made the Rhinos pay as they counter attacked and eventually saw Ryan Shaw managed to slide along the turf to get his side off the mark. The winger converted his own try to give Tim Sheens men a 6-0 lead after 18 minutes.

Things got even better for Rovers soon after when Adam Quinlan supported the break by Chris Atkins to go over for his side’s second try. Shaw was unable to convert from closer in but his side led 10-0.

That try after 22 minutes prompted the arrival of Stevie Ward off the bench for the Rhinos and the forward made an immediate impact to lift his side. He created the ‘home’ sides first try with a wonderful piece of skill to put Adam Cuthbertson through a gap and was instrumental in giving the Rhinos forward momentum.

With two minutes the Rhinos were level with a special piece of footwork from centre Jimmy Keinhorst to leave the Hull KR defence flat footed and he showed great strength to go through the tackle and score. Myler converted the first try but was wide with his second to leave the sides level at the break.

Hull KR edged themselves back in front again at the start of the second half with a Atkins drop goal and they held their 11-10 lead for a long period after that but the Rhinos were growing in ascendency as the half drew on.

The Rhinos had claims for a penalty try dismissed by the video referee James Child when Matt Parcell was held back after hacking ahead a spilled Rovers ball only for the replay to give the visitors the penalty for an infringement at the earlier tackle. However, Leeds did hit the front for the first time with ten minutes to play.

It was Keinhorst again who crossed again as he found a way through the Rovers defence with another display of fine footwork. Myler added the conversion to give his side a 16-11 lead.

The result was sealed when Myler put in a towering bomb that Ryan Hall collected near the touchline and was able to keep his feet despite pressure from a number of defenders before popping up an offload for Keinhorst to collect and cut back inside to score. Myler missed the conversion but his side now led 20-11.

Hull KR thought they had given themselves a lifeline with three minutes to play when Shaw raced through to touch down a kick to the corner but the replays showed an obstruction on Carl Ablett in the build up and the Rhinos had the penalty.

The only cloud over the Rhinos win was a finger injury to Anthony Mullally that ruled him out of the trip to Melbourne for the World Club Challenge.
