Visit the BARA Heritage Exhibition at Friday's game

Supporters attending Friday’s Betfred Super League fixture between Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC are invited to visit BARA’s Beyond the Try Line: Celebrating Community Heritage in Rugby exhibition. The exhibition will be located underneath the South Stand at AMT Headingley Stadium.

BARA volunteers will be available before kick-off to welcome supporters from both clubs, share stories and guide visitors through the exhibition.
The exhibition celebrates the stories, achievements and challenges of South Asian players, coaches, officials, volunteers and community figures who have contributed to both rugby league and rugby union, on and off the field.

Leeds has a particularly important place within this story. BARA founder Dr Ikram Butt grew up a stone’s throw away from the famous AMT Headingley Stadium, and it was at Leeds where he was given his opportunity to play professional rugby.

Dr Ikram Butt, the first British Asian to represent England in rugby league, said: “Bringing the exhibition to Headingley is very special and personal to me. I grew up a stone’s throw away from this famous stadium, and it was at Leeds where I was given my opportunity to play professional rugby alongside my brother Tony Butt.

“Phil Hassan was another South Asian heritage who played for Leeds, while Amraz Hamid represented the Leeds Academy. They are part of an important heritage which deserves to be recognised and celebrated.

“Leeds is a proud, diverse city, and the club has played an important role within the wider community. It has inspired generations of people from different backgrounds to play, support, work and volunteer within rugby. That wider contribution is an important part of the city’s heritage too.

“Rugby’s history belongs to all of us, and we look forward to welcoming supporters from both Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC to discover more about the people and communities who have helped shape our great game.”

The exhibition forms part of BARA’s National Lottery Heritage Fund-supported project, made possible thanks to National Lottery players.
