Smart rewarded for progress with contract extension for 2027

Leeds Rhinos have agreed a contract extension with Oliver Smart that will see the young forward remain with the club next season.

Smart, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Rhinos’ reserves setup, has also gained valuable experience training with the first team this season and will continue in the full-time environment next year.

The extension provides Smart with further opportunity to continue his development within a club that has supported his progression since he joined the Rhinos pathway.

“I’m really pleased,” said Smart. “One part of it was nice peace of mind going through the season knowing you’re going to be here next year. When it was offered, there were no doubts that I was going to sign it. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I’m happy to be extending it.”

Smart believes the new deal is recognition of the club’s commitment to its reserves programme and its wider pathway, while also providing a significant boost to his confidence.

“It’s really nice that they’re putting some faith in me,” he said. “They were the club that gave me a chance and for them to continue that faith is a big boost of confidence. To know that they’re looking after all aspects in every grade, it’s just a really good, positive feeling.”

The 2027 extension is another positive step in Smart’s progression and reflects Leeds’ continued commitment to developing homegrown talent.

Transition Coach Chev Walker added, “I am pleased for Oliver that he gets the chance to build on the hard work he has done this year with a contract extension. Brad has spoken many times this season about how important the role of Oliver and the other guys in the wider first team squad has been this season. They challenge the guys with the first team shirt in training every day to be at their best and that can only improve them individually and collectively as a group as they mature together.”
