Getting to know: Castleford Tigers
Rounding off round 19 of the Betfred Super League, an all-Yorkshire clash sees Leeds Rhinos take on Castleford Tigers at the OneBore Stadium on Sunday, kick off 3pm.
Whilst the year has been largely disappointing for Ryan Carr's side, an opportunity to get back to winning ways against the Rhinos in one of their highlight games of the campaign is an opportunity to be taken and get fans excited about a hopefully much improved 2027.
Here's a closer look at the Tigers:
Key Playmakers
Jason Qareqare
Club Apps: 59 | Points: 148
A career-best season so far sees Jason Qareqare sit at the top of the Tigers' try-scoring charts as the winger has posted 15 tries in all competitions.
Putting an injury-troubled 2025 behind him, the Fiji international's season has gone under the radar compared to his international teammate Maika Sivo as he found try-scoring form in recent weeks to record tries in seven consecutive games. Amongst his highlight performances, the winger has two hat tricks against Bradford and St Helens to his name as he is showing the true colours many Castleford fans predicted they'd see when he made his first team debut back in 2021.
George Lawler
Club Apps: 106 | Tries: 12
Even with a flux in personnel in the Tigers' pack, George Lawler has remained a constant as one player who leads with his actions on and off the field.
Arriving at Castleford with over 100 games under his belt whilst with Hull KR, the forward has maintained a level of consistency that makes him one of the first on the team sheet every week. Aside from only missing one game, no Cas player has made more tackles or post-contact metres than Lawler in Super League this year, plus he also has tries against Wigan, Huddersfield, Bradford and Leigh to his name in 2026 as he matches his season-high tally for scores in a single campaign.
Krystian Mapapalangi
Club Apps: 18 | Tries: 8
A standout signing in a tough campaign for the club, Tigers fans will be happy that Mapapalangi is confirmed on a deal running through next year.
Since joining the club from NRL side Newcastle Knights, the centre has been a wrecking ball on the edge for Cas and formed a formidable partnership with Qareqare that sees the pair rank as the top two metre makers and ball carriers for the Tigers in 2026, plus Mapapalangi is the side's leading tackle breaker with 65.
Before signing for the Tigers, the centre has six senior NRL games and one try for the Knights alongside 38 NSW Cup games with the Knights' Reserves and Wests. He notably played four games alongside Leeds' Cooper Jenkins for the Knights between 2021-23 in the Reserves grade.
