Dally M Centre of the Year - 2017

Career so far: Club

  • A South Sydney junior coming through the ranks, Walker quickly rose through the grades from the Youth Competitions and NSW Cup to make his senior debut at the age of 19 under Michael Maguire. A try scorer on his first NRL appearance in a 54-10 win over Wests Tigers, he went on to play 16 games that season and score eight tries - including a four-game scoring streak against Newcastle, Gold Coast, Parramatta and Canberra.

  • After experiencing a finals run in 2013 that saw the Rabbitohs make it to within 80 minutes of the Grand Final, 2014 proved to be a defining year for the Bunnies and Walker as they experienced Premiership triumph. Only Sam Burgess and Dave Tyrrell played more games than Walker's 24 total appearances that season as the centre proved pivotal in guiding the club to a third-place finish during the regular season, and then starting in the outside backs for both a 40-24 win over Manly and 32-22 win over neighbouring Sydney in the Finals series. With a first Grand Final win since 1971 in sight, Walker started at centre against Canterbury Bulldogs, and aided the Rabbitohs to a 30-6 result.

  • 2015 started with more trophy success as Walker was a try scorer in a dominant 39-0 win over St Helens in the World Club Challenge, but after finishing the domestic season with 14 tries in 23 games, he agreed a release from the final year of his contract.

  • A move to Manly on a four-year deal presented Walker with the opportunity to take the vacant half back role left by Kieran Foran, but a seven year stay at Brookvale saw him cover a multitude of positions in a total of 124 NRL appearances.
  • Putting a disappointing 2016 behind Trent Barrett's team - in which they won eight matches and finished outside the Play Off picture - Walker's move back into the centres saw him have a career year. Alongside finishing behind Akuila Uate with 13 tries in 25 games and taking the Sea Eagles back to the Finals, he was crowned Dally M Centre of the Year on his 23rd birthday. Standout games included his match-winning plays against the Roosters and Raiders as he started to work back towards being one of the premier backs in the competition.
  • A broken leg and fractured ankle at the end of the campaign whilst playing for the Australian Prime Ministers' XIII staggered Walker's start to 2018 as a tough three years followed. Bouncing back from his representative injury to play 14 times in 2018, he was placed on a no-fault stand down by the NRL for the first nine games of 2019 before playing only seven times in 2020 during the COVID-affected season.
  • Five tries in 20 games during 2021 saw Walker spark a Finals run again for the Sea Eagles as he was largely used off the bench, including in finals matchups against Melbourne, Sydney and his former club Souths. He also added 23 games in the final year of his contract extension before moving to the Warriors from 2023.
  • A Maori All Star rep, Walker returned to his heritage to sign with the Warriors in what was deemed a coup signing. His debut season saw him continue in the form that had helped Manly's revival in the early 2020s as he featured in 23 games and scored tries in wins against North Queensland, Parramatta and Newcastle. The latter try against the Knights helped the Warriors through to the penultimate round of the Finals before the Grand Final, but the side lost out to Brisbane in what was ultimately a top season.
  • Now utilised as a forward in Andrew Webster's system, he was part of the pack for 19 games in 2024 before returning to Australia on compassionate grounds in 2025.
  • Joining Parramatta as Jason Ryles looked to add experience to a youthful group, Walker only missed a handful of games as he scored one try in 20 games in a building season for the Eels. He has added three tries in 16 games so far this season, including a ridiculous offload to set up Kelma Tuilagi for a brilliant try last weekend.
  • Walker will join the Rhinos for the 2027 season on a three year contract.

Career so far: Representative

  • Walker's club success has led to increased opportunities at representative and international level since his NRL debut.
  • Starting back in 2014, Walker's form for the Bunnies led to both state and international call-ups. Named alongside the likes of Adam Reynolds, Aaron Woods, Matt Moylan, Daniel Tupou and more as part of Brad Fittler's NSW City Origin side, his rise at Souths saw Tim Sheens call Walker up for Australia's Four Nations squad that year. He ended up starting all four group games and the final defeat to New Zealand.

  • Even though Manly struggled during 2016, Walker's talents weren't missed at state level as he was named in Laurie Daley's New South Wales squad for the 2016 Origin series against the Queensland. Used off the bench in a 6-4 defeat in Sydney in the first game, he was upgraded to a starter for the second game inside Josh Mansour but couldn't inspire a Blues win in Brisbane.

  • Added to this, Walker has also been a four time All Star down under. First called up in 2015 and the NRL's sole try scorer agaisnt the Indigenous team, he has represented the Maori All Stars too in two wins and a draw in three straight years from 2020-2022. He was a try scorer in the Maori's 30-16 result in 2020.
