Leeds Rhinos Reserves were beaten by Warrington Wolves in a competitive encounter that remained closely contested throughout, with both sides enjoying strong spells of momentum.

The game started evenly, with neither side able to gain a clear advantage in the opening ten minutes. Warrington created the first few real opportunities of the game, working the ball well down the right edge of the field on a few occasions. Their attacking movement was eventually rewarded with their opening try, keeping intense pressure on Leeds before adding a second try shortly after to take further control.

The Rhinos attempted to respond through a series of attacking kicks and forward carries, but were repeatedly denied by an organised Wire defence. After struggling to find a way through early in the half, Rhinos were beginning to grow into the game, with both sides trading possession.

The breakthrough for Leeds came following a move down the left edge. After being wrestled to the ground and forced to give up the ball to his teammate, Jacob Hardy found space and crossed to put his side’s first points of the evening on the board. Leeds continued to apply pressure; a brilliant run from the pacey Harry Smith saw him carry the ball from his own half before being brought down by the last Warrington defender in sight. Eager to get back into the game, Rhinos regrouped and secured four more points through Ben Littlewood shortly before half-time.

Leeds continued their momentum after the interval and looked threatening in the early stages, with Ethan O'Neill diving over in the left-hand corner to open the scoring in the second half. The first successful conversion kick of the match, courtesy of Harley Thomas, put Leeds in front. The away side responded strongly, however, with Ewan Smith breaking through down the centre of the pitch before sliding across the line. This marked the beginning of a dominant spell for Warrington, who then got another try on the board moments later, meaning Rhinos would have to do the hard work all over again to get back into the game.

Despite Leeds’ best efforts, the opposing defence remained resolute, shutting down all attacking opportunities before turning play over and charging forward. A strong individual effort by Zack Gardener which saw him travel 30 yards helped the Wire put the game even further out of reach, a successful conversion making matters worse for Rhinos despite their improved play.

With the clock ticking, Leeds kept up the intensity. Jeremiah Mata'utia made a fantastic run, powering through three opposing players before eventually being brought down just short of the line. From the resulting play, Harley Thomas broke through, the full-back crossing to give his side some consolation points.

Ultimately, despite a determined performance and periods of strong attacking play, Leeds were unable to overcome a disciplined Warrington side who proved clinical in key moments to secure the result.
