Getting to know: Warrington Wolves
On Super League's 30th birthday, Warrington Wolves arrive at AMT Headingley as one of the competition's underrated sides after Sam Burgess has guided his side to an unbeaten start to the season.
Coming up against a Leeds side this Sunday at AMT Headingley who are looking to get back to winning ways, the fixture will be a true test of where the Wolves lie in the early predictions for October's Grand Final.
Here's a look closer look at the Wolves:
Key Playmakers
George Williams
Club Apps: 109 | Club Tries: 61
In his farewell year with the Wolves before he takes up a contract in the NRL in 2027, half-back George Williams aims to add one last piece of silverware to his honours list and bring a major trophy back to Warrington for the first time since 2019's Challenge Cup win.
The England international and club captain has been a key figurehead during Sam Burgess, Steve Price and Daryl Powell's tenures at Warrington, bringing both his international experience and domestic form in both the NRL and Super League competitions to a side that has shown potential but failed to get the result on the big stage. Consistently a starter in the halves since his club debut in 2021, Williams hasn't missed a game so far in 2026 as he helps nurture rising talent Ewan Irwin and complement veteran Marc Sneyd after he arrived from Salford in 2025. So far in the Super League competition, he is the competition's leading try assister (7) overall and amongst half-backs, he is in the top ten for metres and carries.
Matty Ashton
Club Apps: 110 | Club Tries: 92
Returning to action last weekend following a frustrating 2025 season, winger Ashton was quickly back to his best form with a hat trick against Castleford in round five.
The Warrington flyer was on for a dominant season before an ACL injury against Leigh in the Challenge Cup derailed his season in mid-May, but nine months later, Ashton is back to his best with his seventh hat trick for the Wolves. Recognised around the league for his pure pace, he has been a dangerous signing since the club recruited the England international from Swinton Lions in 2020, and he has responded with 92 tries in six seasons. 32 of those came in 2024 when he earned Dream Team honours and England honours, plus he looks to add to a total of six tries scored in ten meetings with Leeds.
Sam Stone
Club Apps: 17 | Club Tries: 6
Former Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast Titans forward Stone found himself heading to the Halliwell Jones for the final 12 games of Warrington's season in 2025 and agreed a permanent deal for the next two years.
Ten tries in 48 games for the Red Devils made the Malta international one of the breakout stars after signing from Leigh, but due to the Red Devils' financial difficulties, he only played twice for the club in 2025. Like many of his team mates, he confirmed a move away to sign with Warrington and didn't look back with tries against Castleford, Catalans and Hull KR on his way to extending his stay at the club. He is currently the side's top tackler (122) and has the side's most tackle breaks in a single game this season (9 vs York).
Ewan Irwin
Club Apps: 5 | Club Tries: 1
Few spectators who saw Irwin in action for the Wolves in 2025 were surprised when he was handed a first-team squad number for this season, as the half-back looks to be one of the stars for the future.
Joining Cai Taylor-Wray, Tom McKinney and the Thewlis brothers as headlining the Academy players graduating out of the Wolves' system, Irwin was a part of the Wolves Grand Final-winning Academy squad last year and was prominent for the Reserves too as he earned the backing of Burgess to make the step up to the next level. Already this year, he has become the side's leading points scorer with 54 in total, and has put himself in the club's top ten players for goals in a single game (both for his 13 goals against Goole and 12 against Castleford) and is 9th all-time for the 30 points he scored in total against the Vikings.
